Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Syracuse Chiefs narrowly avoided a four-game series sweep by the Pawtucket Red Sox with a 6-5, 11-inning victory Monday in front of 3,892 at McCoy Stadium.
After the PawSox won the last three days, rallying from early deficits in the process, they were on their way to doing the same in the finale. But Syracuse tied it in the top of the ninth, when Corey Brown belted his second homer, and won it after scoring in the top of the 11th and surviving a two-out double in the bottom half for the the last of 66 outs.
Brown, who started the scoring by taking Pawtucket starter Alfredo Aceves deep in the second, connected in the ninth off Ryan Rowland-Smith with a fly ball just inside the left-field foul pole. Brown's fourth hit of the evening, it evened the score at 5-5.
In the 11th, Brown, who also singled earlier, delivered his fourth knock following an infield hit by Will Rhymes and preceding an RBI single by Chris Marrero that put the 'Cuse ahead, 6-5. All three hits came off right-hander Chris Martin (L, 0-1), who suffered the loss.
With Tanner Roark (W, 3-2) pitching in his third full inning, Brandon Snyder drew a two-out walk to prolong the bottom of the 11th. Bryce Brentz then drilled a liner into left-center. Brown flawlessly fielded the carom and relayed a throw to shortstop Zach Walters, who fired to catcher Zach Watts.
Watts handled the peg, absorbed a collision with Snyder and held on for the final out.
Syracuse's late heroics spoiled an earlier rally helping Pawtucket overcome a 3-0 deficit, created by home runs by Brown and Mike Costanzo off Alfredo Aceves in the second.
The PawSox later took a 4-3 lead on Mitch Maier's fourth-inning double. Then, in the wake of Costanzo's second big fly, leading off the seventh, Snyder singled in the bottom half of the inning for a 5-4 advantage.
While Brown and Costanzo combined for seven hits and five RBI for Syracuse, Maier and Brock Holt had three knocks apiece for the Sox. Holt now owns a 12-game hitting streak, including seven two-hit performances.
Pawtucket hosts Charlotte in the opener of a four-game series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., when Steve Wright (2-2, 4.64) confronts Andre Rienzo (4-3, 6.71).
