International League Announces Player/Pitcher of the Week

The International League announced today that Durham outfielder Wil Myers and Scranton/Wilkes- Barre pitcher Chien-Ming Wang have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 27-June 2. Myers becomes the League-leading fourth member of the Bulls to win an IL weekly award this season, following Vince Belnome (April 22-28), Jake Odorizzi (April 29- May 5), and Alex Colome (May 13-19). Wang is the third RailRider to be so honored in 2013, joining Vidal Nuno (April 15-21) and Zoilo Almonte (April 29-May 5).
WIL MYERS, Durham Bulls - IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Tampa Bay top prospect Wil Myers hit .423 over the past seven days and led the International League with four home runs, 15 RBI, and a 1.038 slugging percentage. He wasted little time making an impact this week, homering and collecting 5 RBI in the 1st inning of Monday's game against Buffalo. Helping Durham to a 9-8 comeback victory on Tuesday, Myers crushed a widely-replayed tape-measure home run in the 7th inning before tying the game in the 9th with another blast. He hit his team-leading 10th homer Sunday and collected three more RBI, giving him 46 on the season (2nd in IL).
22-year-old Wil Myers is in his fifth professional season and first with the Tampa Bay organization. He was traded from Kansas City this past December after becoming just the third player in history to win the Baseball America, USA Today, and Topps Minor League Player of the Year awards in the same season (Andruw Jones, 1996 and Josh Beckett, 2001). Myers is a native of Thomasville, North Carolina.
CHIEN-MING WANG, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders - IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right-handed veteran Chien-Ming Wang won twice this week without allowing a run while limiting opposing batters to just eight hits and three walks over 14.0 innings. As the RailRiders kicked off a road trip against the two top teams in the IL South, Wang helped SWB shut out Norfolk 8-0 on Monday by holding the Tides to two hits in 7.0 innings of work. Saturday night in Durham he tossed 7.0 more shutout innings to lower his ERA on the season to 2.33, 2nd-best in the IL. He also ended Durham's season-high five-game winning streak.
33-year-old Chien-Ming Wang is in his 13th professional season. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a free agent in 2000, and he returned to the organization this offseason as a free agent. He won 19 games for New York in both 2006 and 2007, and overall is a veteran of 130 games in the big leagues with the Yankees and Nationals. Wang is a native of Tainan, Taiwan.
