Bisons Notes

August 16, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

TODAY'S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons host the Rochester Red Wings in the third game of a four-game series from Dunn Tire Park (1:05 p.m.). The series is tied 1-1 after the Herd's 7-3 win on Tuesday night and Rochester's 10-4 victory last night. Buffalo is now 3-5 on their season-long 10-game homestand. On the mound today for Buffalo will be RHP Sean Smith. The righty did not earn a decision last Thursday against Ottawa despite six strikeouts in six innings of work. Rochester will counter with RHP Kevin Slowey.

vs. THE WINGS: Buffalo is 6-4 against Rochester this season with victories in six of the last eight games. As a team, the Herd is hitting .304 with 13 home runs in the 10 games against Red Wings' pitching. The 2005 season (7-9) is the only year since Buffalo rejoined the International League in 1998 that the team didn't have a .500-record or better against the Red Wings.

NEW LEADER: Ben Francisco has over taken Rochester's Jose Morales in the IL batting race. Francisco went 2-4 with a triple last night to raise his average to a league-best .327. Bisons pitching, meanwhile, have held Morales (.324) hitless in seven at-bats in the series. The last Bisons player to lead the league in average was Mark Ryal (.334) in 1990 in the American Association.

COMING ON STRONG: The main reason Ben Francisco has taken over the lead in the batting race is a 14-game hit streak. Since August 2, the outfielder has averaged .390 (23-59) with four doubles, a triple, two home runs, six RBI and 10 runs scored. Francisco also had a 19-game hit streak this year as he hit .423 (33-78) from May 18-June 7.

NEW SPOT: Keith Ginter may not be used to batting in the #2 spot, but he's adapted quite well to the position. Ginter has five hits in nine at-bats (.555) in his first two games batting #2. He has added three runs scored and three RBI. On the year, Ginter leads the Bisons team and is T7th in the International League with 55 walks.

UN-COOPED: OF Jason Cooper now has 171RBI in his 294-game Bisons career. That's good for the 7th most in the Modern Era, five ahead of Bisons' manager Torey Lovullo. Cooper also ranks 9th in doubles (59) and 11th in home runs (39).

THRUWAY SERIES: The Bisons currently lead the 2007 Thruway Cup Series. Buffalo (14-10) is 2.5 games ahead of second place Rochester (12-13) and 3.5 games up on third place Syracuse (13.16). There are just 9 combined Thruway Cup games left.
