INDIANAPOLIS -- Three Pittsburgh Pirates prospects -- Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker and Dave Davidson -- have been promoted from Double-A Altoona (Pa.) to Indianapolis. The talented farmhands are expected to join the Indians on Friday in Durham, N.C.
McCutchen, a 20-year-old outfielder, hit .258 with 10 home runs, 48 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 118 Double-A games this season. He split the 2006 campaign between Low-A Hickory (N.C.) and Altoona, batting .291 with 14 HR and 62 RBI in 114 games for the Crawdads and .308 with three HR and 12 RBI in 20 affairs for the Curve.
McCutchen is rated by Baseball America as the Pirates' No. 1 prospect. He was also named Pittsburgh's Best Minor League Athlete heading into the 2007 season.
McCutchen was originally taken by the Pirates in the first round (11th overall) of the 2005 draft after hitting .709 with 16 HR and 42 RBI as a senior at Fort Meade High School. He was also named Florida's 2005 Gatorade Player of the Year.
Walker, a 21-year-old infielder, batted .288 with 13 long balls and a team-best 66 RBI in 117 Double-A contests this year. He split the 2006 season between High-A Lynchburg (Va.) and Altoona, hitting .284 with three HR and 35 RBI in 72 contests for the Hillcats and .161 with two HR and three RBI in 10 tilts for the Curve.
Walker is rated by Baseball America as the Pirates' No. 2 prospect. He was also tabbed as Pittsburgh's Best Power Hitter heading into the 2007 campaign.
Walker was originally taken by the Pirates in the first round (11th overall) of the 2004 draft after hitting .657 with 13 HR and 42 RBI as a senior at Pine-Richland High School in Pennsylvania.
Walker's father, Tom, pitched in the Major Leagues for Montreal, Detroit, St. Louis and California from 1972-77. His uncle, Chip Lang, pitched in the big leagues for Montreal from 1975-76. Walker is also the brother-in-law of current Indianapolis infielder Don Kelly.
Davidson, a 23-year-old left-hander, posted a 3-1 record and 4.22 ERA in 39 Double-A relief appearances in 2007. He covered the Low-A, High-A and Double-A levels a season ago, combining for a 3-2 mark and 2.01 ERA in 42 outings.
Davidson was added to Pittsburgh's 40-man roster on Nov. 20. He was originally taken by the Pirates in the 10th round of the 2002 draft.
Davidson was a baseball and hockey standout as a senior at Denis Morris High School in Ontario, Canada.
The Indians roster now contains half of Pittsburgh's Top 10 prospects. McCutchen and Walker are joined by RHP Josh Sharpless (No. 5), 1B/RF Steven Pearce (No. 6) and INF Brian Bixler (No. 7).
The first opportunity to see McCutchen, Walker and Davidson at Victory Field will be on Saturday, Aug. 24, when Indianapolis entertains IL West Division-rival Toledo at 7 p.m. A fireworks spectacular will follow the contest.
