Bulls' Bats Fall Silent in 9-1 Loss

Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - After scoring 15 runs the previous night against Charlotte, a solo home run from Evan Longoria was all the offense the Bulls could muster off of RHP Bryan Bullington (11-6) as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Bulls, 9-1 on Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The loss did not hurt the Bulls playoff position greatly though as Rochester lost to Buffalo to remain one game behind in the Wild Card race, and Richmond's game against Toledo was postponed, putting the Bulls one game behind in the race for the South division title.
LHP J.P. Howell (5-7) struck out the first two batters he faced, but a throwing error by third baseman Evan Longoria on a ground ball hit by Jose Hernandez kept the first inning alive, and Steve Pearce came through with a two-run home run to put the Indians on top 2-0. The Indians added three more runs in the third inning with home runs. Chris Aguila hit a solo home run, and Pearce hit another two-run home run with Hernandez on base to give the Indians a 5-0 lead. Howell pitched into the fifth inning, but failed to record an out before allowing three more runs to score, as Milver Reyes scored from third on a wild pitch and Pearce hit a two-RBI double. RHP Calvin Medlock relieved Howell with runners on base after Pearce's double, and gave up a sacrifice fly to Yurendell de Caster to score Hernandez for the Indians ninth run.
Bullington retired the first eleven batters he faced before allowing a single to Justin Ruggiano, and his bid for a shutout ended in the seventh inning with Longoria's solo home run. On the night, he gave up one run, six hits, and two walks while striking out six. Howell finished with a line of nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine in four innings. The Bulls bullpen performed well, as Medlock pitched three scoreless innings and LHP Jeff Ridgway pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game.
The Bulls and Indians will meet again on Friday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
