Buffalo Bisons News Release
TODAY'S GAME: This morning, the Bisons face the Toledo Mud Hens in the second game of a four-game series from Fifth Third Field (10:30 a.m.). Buffalo will be hoping to bounce back from a tough 5-4 loss last night as the Hens scored the game-wining run in the eighth inning. On the mound for the Herd will be LHP Jason Stanford. Stanford was strong his last time out with six shutout innings on Friday in Columbus. Toledo will counter with RHP Dennis Tankersley, who is 2-0 on the year.
SEVEN-YEAR STANNY: With his start last Friday, LHP Jason Stanford became the first player in the Modern Era to appear in seven consecutive seasons with the Bisons. He threw six shutout innings to earn his 21st win in a Herd uniform, seventh most in the Modern Era. Stanford also ranks fourth with his 239 Bisons strikeouts.
HIT STREAK: Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo comes into today's game with a six-game hit streak. Since April 11, Choo has hit .533 (8-15) with five RBI, four walks and two runs scored. Choo has also reached base in all eight games this season, posting a Bisons team-high .571 on-base percentage.
GREAT START: Last night, the Bisons were denied their best start in the Modern Era (1985 on). In 23 seasons, Buffalo has yet to start a season 8-1. However, the Herd has started 8-2 on three occasions, with 2001 being the most recent.
MVP FORM: After starting the season 3-18 at the plate, Ben Francisco has shown the form that made him the Bisons Co-MVP in 2006. In his last four games, Francisco has hit .462 (6-13) with three doubles, a home run, four RBI and five runs scored. On the year, the outfielder has 10 runs scored in nine games, tied for third in the International League.
MORE SPEED: With his first steal of the season last night, Jason Cooper became the eighth Bisons player with at least one stolen base. Ben Francisco also swiped a bag last night, his team-leading third. As a team, the Bisons are 13 of 14 stealing bases this season, good for a 92.9% success rate.
FINALLY TAKEN OUT: A home run by Toledo's Dane Sardinha in the fifth inning last night was the first allowed by the Bisons this season. Buffalo pitchers had started the year by keeping their opponents homerless for 72.0 innings. Last year, the Bisons allowed just 79 home runs, the fewest in the International League.
