Today's Game This afternoon, the Bisons close out their six-game homestand against the Toledo Mud Hens. The Herd needs a win today to salvage a 3-3 split against both Toledo and the Gwinnett Stripers over the homestand. Tomorrow Buffalo begins a seven-game road trip through the IL South. First, the team will take on the Charlotte Knights for three games, followed by four against Gwinnett.
Last Game: BUF 3, TOL 6 RHP Brandon Cumpton went the first five innings for the Herd, but was saddled with the loss in his second start since returning from Toronto (10H, 5R, 4ER, 1BB, 5SO). Toledo struck first against Buffalo, but the home team tied the score 1-1 in the second inning. A four-run third helped pace the Mud Hens to the win, despite 3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s home run for the fourth straight game. Guerrero and INF Tim Lopes both had multi-hit performances in the loss.
Toledo (2-3) The Bisons and Mud Hens last played each other June 5-7 at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH. The Bisons managed to deny the sweep with a 9-5 victory which included a five-RBI day from C Danny Jansen. Jansen has six hits in sixteen at-bats (.375 AVG) with seven RBIs in four games against the Mud Hens.
Today's Starter: RHP Murphy Smith RHP Murphy Smith is making his sixth start for the Bisons this season. It will also be the right hander's 24th overall appearance in Triple-A this season. Smith last pitched in relief on 8/7 against Gwinnett, tossing three innings of scoreless relief. Smith's last spot-start lasted five innings against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on 8/1 in game one of a doubleheader. He earned the win for his efforts (6H, 1R/ER, 3BB, 3SO).
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a solo home run on Saturday to extend his streak to four straight games with a HR. Guerrero Jr. is one game away from tying the Bisons modern era record of a HR in five straight games, which was last done by Andy Marte in 2006. The third baseman was 2-4 in the loss on Saturday overall at the plate.
Tim Lopes INF Tim Lopes collected two more hits against Toledo on Saturday to increase his batting average to a team best .279. It was Lopes' 20th multi-hit game of the season for Buffalo in defeat. On the homestand, the infielder is 7-19 (.368) at the plate. Lopes 88 hits places him second on the Bisons behind 1B Rowdy Tellez (93) for the team lead.
Transactions On Saturday, the Bisons announced that RHP Mike Hauschild had been added to the roster after being optioned from Toronto. In addition, INF Gift Ngoepe was activated off of the Temporary Inactive list.
Bisons' Bits LHP Jose Fernandez extended his scoreless innings streak to 9.2IP over seven relief appearances after working two scoreless innings against Toledo on Friday...The Bisons have just one homestand remaining in 2018, spanning seven games. Their final trip outside of the IL North starts on Monday for seven games.
Blue Jays Update Toronto (52-64) dropped back-to-back decisions to the Tampa Bay Rays thanks a 3-1 loss on Saturday afternoon. RHP Sam Gaviglio worked the first 5.1IP and suffered the defeat. The Blue Jays and Rays conclude their three-game series this afternoon with RHP Marcus Stroman on the hill (1:07 p.m.). Toronto will then hit the road for a seven-game road trip. They will first visit Kansas City for four games, followed by three at the Yankees.
