Gwinnett Stripers News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs ran by the Gwinnett Stripers by an 8-1 score on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series at NBT Bank Stadium.
With the loss, Gwinnett concluded the six-game road trip at 3-3.
The Stripers scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning as Carlos Franco reached on a force play with the bases loaded and one out, scoring Luis Marte from third.
The 1-0 lead did not last long as Gwinnett starting pitcher Andres Santiago had control problems from the onset. He walked two batters with two outs in the bottom of the first and then gave up a two-run double to Moises Sierra. The hit gave Syracuse a 2-1 lead after one inning, a lead they would never surrender.
The Chiefs added one run in the second for a 3-0 lead and three in the third to push the lead to 6-1. Santiago (L, 2-4) was chased away in the third after completing only 2.2 innings. He gave up four hits and six earned runs, walked six and struck out one. Chad Bell entered in the third and finished the inning with no more damage.
But Syracuse tagged Bell for runs in the fourth and fifth to make it 8-1. Bell finished with two earned runs on five hits and three strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Miguel Socolovich closed out the game for the Stripers with 2.0 scoreless innings, one hit and two strikeouts.
Syracuse starting pitcher Jefry Rodriguez (W, 2-2) handcuffed Gwinnett through 6.0 innings, giving up only one unearned run on six hits and striking out a career-high 11. Carlos Torres pitched 1.0 inning with two strikeouts. Tim Collins worked a scoreless top of the eighth. Jimmy Cordero pitched a scoreless top of the ninth with one strikeout.
Lane Adams led the Gwinnett offense by going 2-for-4 with a double. Dustin Peterson went 1-for-4 with a double to push his team-leading on-base streak to 27 games. Austin Riley was 1-for-3 and finished the three-game series 8-for-12 with two doubles, a homer, two runs and one RBI. The first-inning RBI by Franco was his team-leading 70th of the season.
At the plate for Syracuse, Tuffy Gosewisch was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run. Matt Reynolds was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs. Sierra went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The Stripers (55-61) return to Coolray Field on Monday at 7:05 p.m. with the opener of a three-game series against the Louisville Bats. Gwinnett will start right-hander Kyle Wright (1-1, 4.63 ERA). The Bats will start left-hander Cody Reed (4-8 3.92 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 6:35 p.m.
