Peoria Rivermen News Release
Ben Bishop held the Oklahoma City Barons for the final 64:27 on Tuesday night and finished with 23 saves to propel the Peoria Rivermen over the Barons at Carver Arena. Three of four shooters for Peoria were able to find the back of the net in the shootout while Bishop did the rest stopping three of four.
Peoria (37-25-2-5) now sits alone in third place in the West Division with 81 points and now trail the Houston Aeros and Milwaukee Admirals who are in a tie for first with 84 points.
The Barons wasted no time getting on the board scoring just 33 seconds into the game. Colin McDonald let a slapshot go from the top of the right circle that went off the crossbar and in for his 28th of the year from Alexandre Giroux.
After 37:36 of scoreless hockey, Dave Scatchard tied the game for the Rivermen with his fifth of the season. Scatchard fed Drazenovic in the right circle and then Drazenovic slid a pass back through the slot to Scatchard who backhanded a shot past Martin Gerber. The assist was Drazenovic's 150th career point with the Rivermen.
Each goaltender kept the puck out of the net for the duration of regulation so Peoria found themselves in a shootout for the sixth time in their last eight games.
In the shootout, Mark Cundari and Akim Aliu both found the back of the net, and Derek Peltier's backhander under the pads of Gerber sealed the win for the Rivermen. Peoria is now 6-5 this season in shootouts and three of their last four wins have come in the penalty-shot tiebreaker.
The Barons finished on the power play 0-for-3 while the Rivermen finished 0-for-4. The Barons outshot the Rivermen in the game 24-22.
The Rivermen head to Rockford on Saturday night to battle the IceHogs at 7:05. The game can be heard locally on 96.5 ESPN in Peoria or online at www.rivermen.net.
