Montgomery Biscuits News Release
KODAK, Ten. - The Biscuits (68-37) recorded a season-high 17 hits and tied a season-high with their sixth-straight win, polishing off their first series sweep of the year in a 7-1 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (43-61) on Friday night at Smokies Stadium.
Jason Garcia (4-0) made his third start of the season for the Biscuits, and after his counterpart Erick Leal (1-2) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first, the Butter and Blue jumped all over the righty and provided their starter with three runs in the second on a Taylor Walls RBI-double and a mammoth two-run homer to right by Josh Lowe.
The Biscuits tagged Leal for four runs on nine hits through the first three frames with Jim Haley making it a 4-0 game with an RBI-single in third. Carl Chester, who was just called up from A+ Charlotte earlier today, singled for his first Double-A hit in the same inning.
Garcia kept the Smokies hitless entering the fourth, before Vimael Machine banged a one-out double to right to break up the no-hitter. Garcia got some more offensive support in the sixth, when Thomas Milone launched his first home run of the season to right-also off Leal, who served up 12 hits over six innings-and made it a 5-0 contest. Jim Haley added an RBI-double off Ben Hecht in the seventh and it was 6-0 Biscuits.
The Smokies would load the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, and a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Christian Donahue in the same inning scored Tennessee's first run, spoiling the shutout, but Garcia would allow just the lone run in seven terrific innings, his longest outing of the season. Garcia has now won all four of his appearances for the Biscuits.
Tristan Gray would tack on an infield RBI-single in the eighth to make it 7-1, and Ivan Pelaez came on for Garcia in the eight and finished the game with two scoreless innings.
The Biscuits will now return to Riverwalk Stadium for a 10-game home stand on Saturday, July 27 when Matt Krook (1-3) clashes with Lincoln Henzman (2-5) on Christmas in July & MAX Fireworks at 6:05 PM CT. The first five games will be against the Birmingham Barons, and the last five will be against the Chattanooga Lookouts.
The rest of the 10-game home stand will include a Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Wristband Giveaway on Sunday, July 28; Tiger Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, August 1; BBQ Bash featuring a Grill Set Giveaway & MAX Fireworks on Friday, August 2; International Beer Day & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, August 3; And Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Backpack Giveaway on Sunday, August 4.
