Biscuits Sweep Barons in Doubleheader
April 26, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After a rainout on Thursday, the Biscuits (13-8) returned to the Capital City with a flourish, sweeping the Birmingham Barons (9-13) in a doubleheader, 3-1, and 3-2, which included the first walk-off victory of the season, on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Matt Krook opened the first game for the Butter and Blue and looked sharp, hurling two scoreless innings and getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the second unscathed before handing things over to Ricardo Pinto (2-1). The former big leaguer went five innings for the win and allowed just one run on two hits, walking one and striking out six.
The Biscuits got an RBI-triple from David Rodriguez off Kodi Medeiros (0-3) in the second, and then RBI-singles from Jesus Sanchez and Jermaine Palacios in the third and fourth, which was enough for the two-run win.
In the second game, Sam McWilliams had it working early, tossing four scoreless frames and getting a pair of solo homers from Sanchez and Lucius Fox in the second and third, both off Barons starter Jimmy Lambert.
Birmingham would rally in the fifth, however, with a double by Laz Rivera and a Joel Booker hit-by-pitch, before Luis Gonzalez tied the game with a two-run triple off McWilliams. Curtis Taylor then entered the game and stopped the bleeding over 1.2 scoreless, while Phoenix Sanders (2-0) pitched a scoreless top of the seventh.
In the bottom half, after a Tristan Gray strikeout, Brendan McKay grounded a routine ball to second, but Ti'Quan Forbes booted it and the error allowed the designated hitter to reach second. Palacios then came on to pinch run for McKay, and Mauricio Cabrera intentionally walked Miles Mastrobuoni before walking Robbie Tenerowicz to load the bases. That's when Rene Pinto pounded an RBI-single over the head of Gonzalez in right field for the Biscuits first walk-off win of 2019.
Montgomery will go for the series win on Saturday night when Kenny Rosenberg (1-0) dukes it out against Bernardo Flores (1-2) at 6:05 PM CT when it will be Harry Potter Night and MAX Fireworks at Riverwalk Stadium.
The home stand will also feature Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Hat Giveaway and Autism Awareness Day on Sunday, April 28; Craft Beer Night on Wednesday, May 1; Military Appreciation Night and MAX Fireworks on Friday, May 3; Star Wars Night featuring a Jersey Auction and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, May 4; and Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Sunday, May 5.
