Two-Way Player Kaleb Cowart Joins BayBears

April 26, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - The Los Angeles Angels announced Friday that two-way player Kaleb Cowart has been added to the Mobile BayBears roster. Cowart was a first-round draft pick in 2010 and has appeared with the Angels as a position player in each of the past four seasons.

Cowart was previously the No. 1 prospect in the Angels organization in 2013 and last appeared at the Double-A level in 2014 with Arkansas. He will be the first position player with Major League service time to play for the BayBears as the Double-A affiliate of the Angels. Cowart has slashed .177/.241/.293 with six home runs and 33 RBIs in 162 Major League games.

The Angels selected Cowart with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft out of Cook High School in Adel, Georgia. He was named the 2010 Gatorade High School Baseball Player of the Year as a third baseman and pitcher. In his senior season, he posted a 10-1 record on the mound with a 1.05 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 73 innings. Cowart has yet to appear in a professional game as a pitcher.

Cowart is one of five two-way players in the Angels organization. The list includes current BayBear Bo Way, former BayBear Jared Walsh, Major Leaguer Shohei Ohtani, and No. 30 prospect William English. Cowart and Walsh were East Cobb Baseball club teammates as teenagers in suburban Atlanta.

This offseason, Cowart was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners on December 10 and the Detroit Tigers on January 24. The Angels claimed him from Detroit on February 23, but he was removed from the 40-man roster and sent outright to the Minors on March 20 after clearing waivers. Cowart did not report to an affiliate and remained in Arizona for Extended Spring Training.

Cowart will be the fourth Angels first-round draft pick to play for Mobile, joining current BayBears outfielder Jo Adell (No. 10 overall in 2017) and former BayBears infielders Matt Thaiss (No. 16 in 2016) and Taylor Ward (No. 25 in 2015).

In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Adrian De Horta has been placed on the temporarily inactive list.

The BayBears begin a five-game home series against the Mississippi Braves Friday at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage can be seen on MiLB.tv (subscription required, promo code: BAYBEARS) and heard on MobileBayBears.com, the TuneIn app, and the MiLB First Pitch app., with the Countdown to First Pitch starting at 6:45 p.m.

The BayBears host a total of 70 home dates through Labor Day, September 2. The new BayBears Pass is available, featuring a general admission ticket to every BayBears game at Hank Aaron Stadium for only $19.97 per month. Season ticket packages and partial plans are also available, featuring a 7-game plan and a 12-game option to guarantee bobbleheads and receive tickets to select fireworks nights.
