BIRDS WASTE GREAT START BY GONZALEZ
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-8) wasted one of Jino Gonzalez's best starts of the season, as they failed to score for the third time in a week, and lost 4-0 to the Sioux City Explorers (7-5) on Sunday afternoon.
The game remained scoreless into the seventh inning. With one out, Jason Colson was hit by a pitch and Derek Schermerhorn walked to put two men on base for Sioux City. After Brett Mieras flew out to centerfield, Dustin Jones hit a ground ball to second base. Joe Anthonsen misplayed the ball, and the third error of the season by the American Association's top defensive second baseman allowed Colson to score and give the Explorers a 1-0 lead.
Sioux City extended their lead in the eighth inning. Patrick Lawler came on in relief and walked the only two batters he faced before being relieved by Andrew Pluta. The first batter Pluta faced was James Boone. Boone laid down a bunt, that Pluta threw away at first base. The error allowed Alex Llanos and Justin Nelson both to score for a 3-0 Explorers lead. James Boone then scored on a single by Derek Schermerhorn. Boone's run was the last of the game in Sioux City's 4-0 win.
Gonzalez (2-4) was saddled with a hard-luck loss despite pitching seven strong innings and allowing only one unearned run on four hits while walking two and striking out two. Mike Phelps (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Explorers.
The Canaries now head into the All-Star Break, with the 2009 American Association All-Star Game taking place on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. You can listen to the American Association All-Star game on the flagship radio station for Canaries baseball, Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230 KWSN.
