Birds plate eight in win

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Lakewood, NJ- At the beginning of the season, Sean Gleason was an unknown member of the bullpen. Now, he's the winner of twelve games and the ace for the Delmarva Shorebirds.

Gleason allowed just one run over six innings and the Birds got three hit games from three different players as Delmarva rolled to an 8-3 win over Lakewood on Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. Joe Nowicki was 3-3 with a double and two RBI, Wally Crancer was 3-4 with three RBI, and Tyler Henson was 3-5 with three RBI as the troika combined to drive in all eight runs for the Shorebirds. Delmarva broke through in a scoreless game in the top of the second when Wally Crancer's two-out, two-run homer game the Birds a 2-0 lead. Although Lakewood scratched a run off Gleason in the bottom of the third, the Birds took firm control in the fourth and the fifth. Henson blasted his 11th homer of the season to begin the fourth inning and give Delmarva the 3-1 edge. Later in the inning, Crancer's two-out single plated Nowicki for a 4-1 lead.

Henson, playing shortstop for the first time this season, drove in two more on a bases-loaded single in the fifth. Nowicki proceeded to drive in Ryan Adams on a sacrifice fly a batter later and the Birds led 7-1.

The BlueClaws scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning, in part, because of Ryan Adams' record-tying 50th error of the season. With a runner at second base, Adams charged Travis D'Arnoud's slow roller to second base. His off-balance throw went wide of the first-baseman Anthony Martinez and Adams was charged with his first error in ten days. The 50 error mark for a second baseman in the South Atlantic League matches Juan Samuel's record set in 1981. Samuel went on to be a three time All-Star in the major leagues and is currently the third-base coach for the Orioles.

Hank Williamson pitched the seventh and the eighth, allowing just the two unearned runs in his Shorebirds debut. Robert Neigebauer tossed a perfect ninth to preserve the victory for Gleason.
