
Sand Gnats Irritate RiverDogs, 4-1

CHARLESTON, SC - Savannah starter Mike Olmsted, making his South Atlantic League debut, pitched 5.0 shutout innings, and Casey Craig drove home two runs, as the Sand Gnats beat the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-1, in front of 2,373 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Monday night.
With the victory, the Sand Gnats improve to 26-34 in the season's second half and 59-71 overall while the RiverDogs fall to 30-32 since the All-Star break and 75-57 on the season.
Olmsted, in his 5.0 full innings of work, scattered three hits while walking one and striking out six. Stephen Puhl allowed one run on one hit in his two innings of work, and closer Rhiner Cruz earned his first save of the season with two strikeouts in his two innings on the mound.
Savannah cracked the scoreboard in the top of the first with a run, when Richard Pena walked, Francisco Pena singled moving Richard Pena to third, and Richard Pena scored on a wild pitch from Charleston starter Noel Castillo (7-8).
The Sand Gnats added their second run, an unearned run, in the fifth, when Darren Clark drew a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on Luis Nieves' single. Clark then scored on Craig's first RBI of the night that came on a single to center.
Charleston scored in the sixth inning when Chase Weems, who was called up earlier in the day from the Gulf Coast League, drew a walk and scored on Brandon Laird's RBI double to left field to bring the RiverDogs to within 2-1.
But Savannah came right back with a run in the seventh when Clark singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on Craig's RBI single.
The Sand Gnats added an insurance run in the ninth when Nick Giarraputo singled, moved to second on Clark's single, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Giarraputo scored, when Nieves hit into a double play.
Castillo went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking two. Gabe Medina pitched the sixth and seventh frames and allowed one run on two hits while fanning a pair, and Chace Vacek pitched 2.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits and fanned two.
Craig had three hits to lead Savannah's 10-hit parade, while Francisco Pena and Clark each contributed a pair of hits.
Of Charleston's four hits, Austin Krum led the way with two, while Laird and Justin Snyder accounted for the other two.
Game 2 of this three game series - the RiverDogs' last homestand of the season - is set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with righty Ryan Zink (2-2, 3.15 ERA) pitching for Charleston while Savannah counters with righty Phillips Orta (NR).
