
Drive Come Up Short in Home Finale, 6-4

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (67-66, 27-36) closed out their home schedule Monday night be putting a scare into the Southern Division's first place team. But in the end it was the Augusta GreenJackets (83-49, 42-21) who used four homers to prevail 6-4 at Fluor Field.
Thomas Neal belted a two-run homer in the top of the first off Brock Huntzinger (1-3) to give the GreenJackets the early lead. However, Greenville recorded four hits in their first at bat, scoring three runs to overtake Augusta.
After singles from David Mailman and Carlos Fernandez, Jered Stanley knocked in both runners with a triple. Rafael Cabreja then followed with an RBI-single to give the Drive their only lead of the game.
Augusta's offense continued to roll, hitting a home run in each of the next three innings to round out their scoring. Garrett Baker tied the game with a solo shot in the top of the third and Nick Noonan added a solo shot an inning later.
Zach Penprase tied the game for the Drive in the bottom of the third, knocking in Stanley with an RBI-single. But the GreenJackets took advantage of a pair of Drive errors in the fourth to take the lead before Dayton Buller smacked a solo homer to put Augusta up by two.
The game turned into a pitchers duel for the final five frames as two Drive pitchers combined for 5.1 scoreless innings, while the GreenJackets countered with four relievers for the final 6.0 innings.
Javier Garcia limited the GreenJackets to just one hit and a walk over 3.1 innings, striking out four before turning the game over to Eammon Portice.
After an off day on Tuesday, the Drive will conclude the 2008 season with on the road for three-game road series' in Asheville and Hickory. First up for the Drive will be the Tourists at McCormick Field.
Southpaw Jose Alvarez will toe the rubber for Greenville as Asheville counters with right-hander Connor Graham in the series opener with first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
