Hagerstown Suns News Release
EASTLAKE, OH -The Hagerstown Suns (24-39) started their penultimate series on the road with a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Lake County Captains (31-31) on Monday.
Hagerstown got off to a good start as Bryan Miller drove in Jake Rogers with an RBI double in the top of the second inning after starting pitcher Tom Milone (0-3) struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the first.
The lead, however, was short-lived as the Captains battled back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second, and added one more in the third inning, to make the score 4-1.
The Suns closed the gap in the top of the fourth as two runs scored on an error by Captains' second baseman Karexon Sanchez. Sean Rooney scored from third base and Blake Stouffer from second as Sanchez misplayed a two-out ground ball hit by Miller.
Milone lasted only for innings for the Suns, as Lake County struck for two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-3. On the night, Milone took the loss as he allowed six runs, including five earned runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out five
Garrett Rieck (1-1) earned the win for Lake County with one and one third innings of relief, in which he did not allow a run. Rieck came into the game in the top of the fifth inning with two outs in relief of starting pitcher Chris Archer. Archer allowed all three runs for the Suns, though only two were earned.
On the night, the Suns managed just three runs on eight hits, even with the benefit of four errors committed by the Captains defense.
Both bullpens were excellent, as Ryan Buchter and Jamie Lehman combined to shutdown the Lake County offense over the final four innings. Buchter struck out three batters in his two innings of work while Lehman fanned two.
Jonathan Holt earned his first save for Lake County, pitching a perfect ninth inning, after Mike Pontius held the Suns in check for two innings out of the bullpen.
The Suns and Captains will play game two of their three game series on Tuesday, August 26th at 7:05 P.M. The Suns have just seven games remaining in the 2008 season, five of which are against the Lake County Captains.
