'Birds Open Road Trip with Thumping of FredNats

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - ThThe Delmarva Shorebirds continued their dominance in Fredericksburg as they collected a 9-4 win against the Fredericksburg Nationals on Tuesday night at FredNats Ballpark.

The win marks the Shorebirds (18-6) seventh in a row against the Nationals (5-20).

Gunnar Henderson started the scoring for Delmarva in the first inning as after a one-out Darell Hernaiz single, Henderson smacked his seventh homer of the season making it 2-0 Shorebirds.

Fredericksburg got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first. Viandel Pena singled to begin the frame and Jeremy De La Rosa followed with a walk. Telmito Agustin then slashed a single to left, scoring Pena, and to pull Fredericksburg to within one at 2-1.

In the third, Anthony Servideo doubled to begin the inning for Delmarva and then moved to third on a flyout. Henderson brought him in with a sacrifice fly to restore Delmarva's two run lead.

Fredericksburg responded immediately again in the bottom of the third. Pena beat out a bunt hit to start the rally and then advanced to second on a balk. After a strikeout Agustin walked and Junior Martina singled to left to load the bases. Ricardo Mendez then bounced into a fielder's choice at second, scoring Pena, and making it a 3-2 game.

The Shorebirds stretched their lead back out in the fifth. Mason Janvrin walked to start the inning before pinch-hitter Trevor Kehe reached on a fielder's choice with a subsequent throwing error pushing Janvrin to third. Hernaiz dropped a single to center to score Kehe before Henderson ripped a double to right to make it 5-2 Delmarva, now with runners at second and third. After back-to-back strikeouts, Dylan Harris walked with a wild pitch on ball four allowing Hernaiz to score from third to make it 6-2 but Henderson was gunned down at the plate trying to score from second on the play.

Once more, the Nationals answered back in the home half of the fifth. Pena and De La Rosa both singled to open the inning. After back-to-back strikeouts, Ricardo Mendez yanked a single to left, scoring Pena, and drawing the Nationals to within three at 6-3.

Getting ever closer, the FredNats scored once in the seventh. Martina singled to kick off the inning and then swiped second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the play. After a strikeout, J.T. Arruda reached on a fielding error that also allowed Martina to score to make it 6-4 Delmarva.

The Shorebirds pushed across two insurance runs in the eighth, as Janvrin provided one run with a sacrifice fly and Kehe brought in another with an RBI single.

TT Bowens collected his first Delmarva hit and RBI and a run-scoring hit in the ninth to bring the game to its final line of 9-4.

Ryan Watson (2-0) collected his second win of the year for the Shorebirds, going three innings out of the bullpen while giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Rodney Theophile (0-3) started and was saddled with the loss for the FredNats after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks over five innings, striking out six.

Shane Davis started for Delmarva but did not factor into the decision. Davis went three frames, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks, striking out three.

Henderson extended his MiLB leading RBI total by driving in four, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and a homer. In his first Delmarva game, Cullen finished 2-for-5 while Hernaiz also had two hits, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Out of the leadoff spot for the FredNats, Pena went a perfect 3-for-3 and added two walks and three runs scored.

The sides meet up again on Wednesday, June 2, at the New FredNats Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Xavier Moore (1-2, 2.70) takes the ball for Delmarva while Fredericksburg sends out RHP Daniel Espino (1-0, 2.70).
