Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-27) left 10 men on base, eight in scoring position, as they lost 4-2 to the Sioux City Explorers (17-27) on Wednesday night at Lewis & Clark Park. Joe Anthonsen led the offense, going 4-for-5 and scoring both of the Canaries runs.
The Explorers started the scoring in the second inning. Nick McCoola started the inning with a single. Brett Mieras followed with a bunt. Canaries starting pitcher Ryan Ford fielded the bunt and threw to second, trying to retire McCoola. Ford's throw was off and sailed into centerfield, allowing McCoola to get to third base. McCoola came in to score as Derek Schermerhorn bounced into a fielder's choice, and the Explorers took a 1-0 lead.
The Canaries came right back and tied the game in the third. Anthonsen doubled and advanced to third on a groundout by Tim Hutting. After Cody Haerther walked, Beau Torbert singled to score Anthonsen and knot the score, 1-1.
Sioux City regained the lead in the fifth inning. Brett Mieras singled and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Derek Schermerhorn. A wild pitch advanced Mieras to third base. With the infield pinched in, Boomer Berry popped a ball up to shallow centerfield. The ball was lost in the lights by centerfielder Beau Torbert, and dropped in for an RBI double to put Sioux City ahead, 2-1. Berry then came around to score on a line drive single by Dustin Jones to give the Explorers a 3-1 lead after five innings.
In the sixth, Sioux City got another run. Greg Stevens doubled, and scored on a single by Nick McCoola. Stevens run gave the Explorers a three-run lead, 4-1.
The Canaries got one back in the seventh. Joe Anthonsen singled and advanced to third on a single by Tim Hutting. Cody Haerther hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Anthonsen and get the Canaries within a pair, 4-2. Beau Torbert followed with a double to put the tying runs in scoring position, but Cory Harris struck out looking to end the inning and the Canaries last good chance in the 4-2 loss.
Ryan Ford (3-10) gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits in the loss, which tied the Canaries club record for losses in a season set by Micah Posey in 2007. Ty Marotz (6-9) scattered 10 hits over seven innings, allowing only two runs, one earned, to pick up the win for Sioux City. Brett Reid allowed just one hit in the ninth inning as he recorded his 17th save of the season.
