El Paso Diablos News Release

Shreveport, LA - The El Paso Diablos delivered a big blow to the playoff hopes of the Shreveport-Bossier Captains as El Paso defeated the Captains 2-1 on Wednesday night at Fair Grounds Field. Justin Mallett was fantastic on the mound once again as he pitched eight strong innings to pick up his seventh win of the season.

The one run against Mallett (7-4) was unearned as he allowed only five hits while striking out six in eight innings. At one point he sat down 11 in a row, and went on to sit down 15 out of 16. Mike Cervera made sure his efforts held up as he struck out two in the ninth inning to pick up his eighth save of the season.

All the scoring would be done in the first two innings. The Diablos plated their first run on a two out RBI single by Jeff Vincent. El Paso made it 2-0 in the second inning when Kennard Bibbs brought in Gerardo Verastegui on an RBI ground out. The Captains scored their only run in the second inning when Kevin Griffin brought in a run on a ground out of his own. From there on both pitchers, Mallett and the Captains' Thad Markray would settle down and pitch very strong down the stretch.

Jeff Vincent once again led the offense by going 3-4 at the plate and also added a stolen base. To go along with the good night at the plate, Vincent made a great diving catch with a runner in scoring position and two outs in the eighth inning. Juan Camacho extended his hit streak to 19 straight as he went 2-4 with a double, while Gerardo Verastegui also turned in a 2-4 performance.

The Diablos return home to start their final series of the season against the Fort Worth Cats on Thursday night. Clegg Snipes (1-2, 4.54) makes his final start of the season for El Paso and will be opposed by the Cats' Jae Jung (7-3, 2.50). First pitch is slated for 7:05 as it will be a Thirsty Thursday as the Diablos offer one dollar drinks. Fans can listen along online at www.diablos.com .
