Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALEM, VA. - A consistent offensive attack from the Salem Red Sox was too much for the Delmarva Shorebirds to overcome as they fell 9-6 on Wednesday night at Carilion Clinic Field.

After taking the opening game of the series, the Shorebirds (38-71, 17-27) saw the Red Sox (56-53, 21-22) even the series up at a game apiece.

Salem opened the scoring with two runs in the third. A single and an error started the frame, putting runners at second and third. Eddinson Paulino then ripped an RBI single before Eduardo Lopez hit into a fielder's choice to bring in a second run.

The Red Sox doubled their lead in the fourth. With runners at first and second, Kier Meredith singled to leftfield, scoring one run, but the throw into the plate was off-line, allowing the runner from first to come all the way around to score as well to make it 4-0 Salem.

The Shorebirds finally cracked the scoreboard in the fifth. Isaac De Leon walked and Adam Retzbach singled to start the inning. After a groundout advanced both runners, Creed Willems plated De Leon with a sacrifice fly. Reed Trimble then knocked an RBI single to left, making it 4-2.

Salem restored their four-run lead in the sixth. Karson simas drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run before Paulino collected his second RBI single off the game, making it 6-2.

Dylan Beavers singled with two outs in the eighth for Delmarva, and after three wild pitches, came in to score to pull the 'Birds to within 6-3.

Salem got much needed insurance in the last of the eighth. Paulino picked up his third RBI single of the day to start the scoring in the frame. Then with runners at second and third, Lopez hit a grounder to second which resulted in a play at the plate with the runner beating the tag to score on the fielder's choice. A balk with the bases loaded forced home the third run of the frame.

The 'Birds mounted a furious late charge in the ninth. Retzbach was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Crampton then walked before Willems drove in Retzbach with a double. A wild pitch then scored Crampton with Willems moving to second. Willems then scored on a Reed Trimble single. After a strikeout, Max Wagner singled to bring the tying run to the plate, but that's where the 'Birds rallied fizzled out as they fell 9-6.

Juan Daniel Encarnacion (9-4) started and secured the win for Salem. He allowed two runs in five innings on three hits and two walks striking out four.

Conor Grady (5-9) suffered the loss for Delmarva, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk, striking out four.

The Shorebirds continue their six-game series against the Salem Red Sox on Thursday, August 18 at Carilion Clinic Field. Juan De Los Santos (2-9, 4.08) is scheduled to go for Delmarva against Hunter Dobbins (0-3, 3.83) for Salem. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
