Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Pelicans jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold on. After putting up three runs in the top of the first, the Pelicans were outscored 8-1 the rest of the way in an 8-4 loss to the Frederick Keys in the opener of a four-game series. The loss snaps the Birds' five-game winning streak and decreases their lead in the Southern Division to four and a half games.
Things looked good for Myrtle Beach in the beginning as the Pelicans plated three before even taking the field defensively. Jared Hoying and Ryan Strausborger singled with one out in the first and two batters later, Vinny DiFazio singled home Hoying to put the Birds on the board. Jared Prince followed with a two-run double to make it a 3-0 lead against Keys starter Oliver Drake.
Staked with the early advantage, Pelicans starter Barret Loux cruised through a 1-2-3 first inning. He ran into trouble in the second though with a leadoff walk to Tyler Townsend and a single to Tyler Kolodny. Dale Mollenhauer doubled home Townsend and Kolodny scored on a wild pitch as the Keys cut it to 3-2. Loux buckled down with the tying run at third and nobody out, striking out two and getting a line out to end the frame.
The Keys tied it in the third though when Steven Bumbry scored from third on a wild pitch. It was Loux's tenth wild pitch of the season, the most in the Carolina League. Loux was chased from the game after two and two-thirds innings or work. The righty allowed three runs on two hits, walking four and striking out four.
Zach Osborne entered for Loux and although he struck out Brian Ward for the final out of the third, he had a rough fourth. He loaded the bases with an infield single and two walks before Kipp Schutz drove home the go-ahead run with a groundout. Townsend followed with the big hit, a two-run single to give the Keys a 6-3 lead before Kolody singled him home to make it 7-3. Osborne (0-1) takes the loss after allowing four runs in one and a third innings.
The Pelicans got a run back in the top of the fifth when Jared Hoying led off with an opposite-field solo homer, his fifth of the year to cut the lead to 7-4. The Keys took the run right back however, when Jacob Julius homered in the bottom of the fifth off Kasey Kiker to put Frederick back up by four.
Kiker was solid though in his two and two-thirds innings, striking out six while walking only two and surrendering only two hits. Chad Bell finished the game for the Pelicans by retiring all four batters he faced.
The Birds could not get any closer against Drake (3-2) who gave up four runs in six innings. The former Navy Midshipman walked one and struck out seven.
Chris Petrini recorded his first save of the season after shutting out Myrtle Beach for the final three innings.
The second game of the series is tomorrow night as lefty Nick Haughian goes on three days rest for Frederick against Pelicans lefty Robbie Ross. After a weekend series in Lynchburg, the Pelicans return home for a four-game series against Winston-Salem starting Monday, June 6. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
