Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 30, 2011) - Behind Ryan Buch's 6.2 hitless innings, the Dash pitching staff combined to one-hit the Nationals and won 7-1 on Memorial Day at BB&T Ballpark. The Winston-Salem pitchers took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before Jeff Kobernus' single ended the bid.
The one-hitter for Winston-Salem (22-28) was the second one-hitter hurled by Dash pitchers this season, and the first in BB&T Ballpark history. Hector Santiago and the bullpen combined to allow only one hit to the Salem Red Sox on May 13 in Salem. The winning effort also saw the Winston offense explode for a season-high 13 hits.
The Dash used two Nationals errors in the second and third innings to rack up four unearned runs against P-Nats starter Danny Rosenbaum. In the second, Kyle Colligan singled with two outs. Rosenbaum had Colligan picked off at first base, but first baseman Steven Souza's throw to retire Colligan was errant, allowing him to reach second. The next batter, Jason Bour, doubled home Colligan. Daniel Wagner drove home Bour with a single to put the Dash up 2-0.
Winston doubled its lead in the third. Tyler Saladino walked to start the frame, and then advanced to second on Jared Mitchell's single. After Jose Martinez flew out, Ian Gac hit a groundball to third that Justin Bloxom fielded, but his throw to second base went into right field. The error by Bloxom allowed Saladino to score. Mitchell moved to third and scored on Jake Oester's single.
In the fourth, Bour led off with his second hit of the ballgame, a single to right field. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third when Saladino singled. Mitchell then drove in Bour with a sacrifice fly to put Winston on top 5-0.
Buch took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but was pulled after two outs because he reached his pitch count. Reliever Santos Rodriguez finished out the inning.
Potomac (18-32) reached the scoreboard with a run before the Nationals managed their first hit. Both took place in the eighth inning against Rodriguez. Jose Lozada led off with a walk. Cutter Dykstra and Eury Perez followed with successive groundouts to first base. Perez's groundout drove in Lozada. Kobernus then hit a clean single to center field, breaking up the no-hitter. Heading into the at-bat, Kobernus was 0-for-22 against Winston-Salem pitching this season.
Winston responded with two runs in the eighth, when Andy Wilkins singled with one out, and scored on Oester's triple. After Colligan walked, Bour hit a sac fly to score Oester and extend the lead to 7-1, the eventual final score.
Buch (1-0) earned his first win with Winston-Salem after 6.2 scoreless, hitless innings. He struck out three and walked five. Rosenbaum (2-3) threw 7.2 innings and gave up seven runs (three earned) on 13 hits, but got the loss.
Winston-Salem and Potomac continue their four-game series Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com .
