'Birds Beat Big League Arm, 9-6 to Complete Sweep of Captains

Eastlake, Ohio- Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Jake Westbrook rehabbing a strained abdominal muscle labored through five innings for the Captains as Delmarva won its third straight overall and ninth straight over Lake County, 9-6 Wednesday afternoon at Classic Park.

Westbrook gave up five runs in five innings, including a four run, five hit fourth inning by Delmarva. Westbrook is 0-3 in his minor league starts this year after posting a 1-2 record in the major leagues with a 7.90 ERA. Westbrook lasted only three and two-thirds innings combined in his previous starts at Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A Akron giving up nine runs and 12 hits.

Brad Bergesen started for Delmarva and was dominate through seven innings scattering six hits and allowing only one run, while striking out seven. Stu Musslewhite led the way offensively for the ‘Birds with two hits and four RBI. Every Delmarva starter had at least on hit and Musslewhite, Brandon Tripp, Chris Vinyard and Miguel Abreu had two hits apiece.

Lake County rallied in the bottom of the ninth for the second straight day but again fell short. Brett Bordes struck out Carlos Rivero looking with the tying run on deck to end the rally. Rivero was retired for the final out Tuesday night as well.

The Shorebirds are now 13 and two in its last 15 games and are 11-2 against the Captains in 2007. Delmarva is a season high three games over the .500 mark and head for Lakewood for a four game series to wrap up the first half of the season. Kyle Schmidt (3-2, 3.93 ERA) takes the hill for Delmarva and the BlueClaws counter with right hander Edgar Garcia (2-5, 5.03 ERA)
