
Nationals Promote Prospects From Hagerstown To Potomac

The Washington Nationals on Monday promoted four Hagerstown Suns to High-A Potomac. Outfielders Chris Marrero, Justin Maxwell and Mike Daniel, as well as first baseman Brett McMillan were moved up just before Monday night's game against the Lakewood BlueClaws.
Marrero, who was Washington's first-round draft pick (15th overall) last year, ended his Suns' tenure tied for second in the South Atlantic League with 53 RBI and tied for second in the league with 14 home runs. Marrero hit .293 with 14 doubles and a .545 slugging percentage in 57 games overall, and was recently named a mid-season SAL All-Star. Marrero, 18 years old, hit a league-leading 11 home runs with 35 RBIs in the month of May.
Maxwell, who played his college ball at the University of Maryland and was selected by the Nationals in the fourth round of the 2005 draft, is tied for second in the league with 14 homers and ranks third with a .579 slugging percentage. Maxwell hit .301 with 12 doubles, two triples and 40 RBI in 56 games overall. Maxwell led the team with 14 stolen bases and was second in the SAL with 51 runs. The 23-year-old was named the Topps SAL Player of the Month for May after batting .320 (31-for-97) with seven homers, 18 RBI and a .411 on-base percentage in 25 games.
Daniel, 22, hit .290 with 15 doubles, seven homers and 37 RBI in 54 games, and was recently named a Sally League All-Star. The University of North Carolina product was selected in the seventh round by the Nationals in the 2005 First-Year Play Draft. Daniel hit .300 with 5 home runs and 22 RBIs in the month of May. 2007 marks the second consecutive year Daniel was named to the All-Star game, as he was a short-season Single-A New York-Penn League mid-season All-Star in 2006.
Brett McMillan batted .266 with 12 doubles, five homers and 21 RBI in 51 games for the Suns. His 33 walks ranked first on the team and his .396 on-base percentage was second. McMillan was selected in the 14 th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft by the Nationals.
In addition, Suns' right-handed pitcher Greg Bunn and infielder Alexis Nunez were promoted to the High-A affiliate after Sunday's game against the Lake County Captains. Bunn, a fifth round draft selection by the Nationals in 2004 was 1-0 with a 2.36 ERA. Bunn did not allow a run in the month of May and had gone 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings before yielding a run on Sunday at Lake County. Nunez hit .271 with 6 home runs, 6 doubles with 23 RBIs for the Suns. Nunez hit 4 home runs with 7 RBIs during a 5 game stretch between April 26-April 30 th.
Four of the six former Suns contributed last night in Potomac's loss at Winston-Salem as Justin Maxwell, Mike Daniel, Chris Marrero and Brett McMillan all had at least one hit in their Carolina League debut. Maxwell went 2-3 with a walk, and a run scored on Daniel's first inning RBI single. Marrero had a single in the 6 th and Brett McMillan hit a two-run homer.
