Birds' 9th-Inning Rally Falls Short

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - When things aren't going your way, it's tough to find silver linings in the little things, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans showed signs of coming out of their early season doldrums before a late-inning collapse sent the Pelicans to their third consecutive loss and sixth in a row from BB&T Coastal Field.

Things started out rosy for the team from the Grand Strand, if not a big soggy as rain delayed the first pitch by an hour, as the team plated a pair of runs in the third inning on the strength of a Cole Miles RBI single and a bases loaded walk from Gerardo Avila. That appeared to be plenty for J.J. Hoover who allowed just one hit through the first four innings before surrendering a pair in the fifth.

Tim Pahuta blasted his sixth home run of the season in the fifth and Tyler Moore came around to tie the game on a sacrifice fly. The Pelicans broke through in the sixth off reliever Martin Beno as Shayne Moody laced a single to center to score Adam Milligan to break the tie, and Cole Miles scampered home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 ballgame.

That lead would hold until the eighth inning when the Nats blew the game open against Pelicans reliever Benino Pruneda. With the bases loaded and two outs in the frame, Pruneda tried to sneak a 2-2 fastball past Pahuta, but Pahuta was ready for it and lined it to the left-center field gap to bring home all three baserunners. Amadeo Zazueta's throw skipped away from Shayne Moody at third base and rolled into the Potomac dugout, allowing Pahuta to score what would be an all-important run.

The P-Nats notched another unearned run in the ninth to make it 7-4 before the Pelicans mounted their comeback on Cole Kimball. Moody singled and came around to score on a Zazueta double, and Gerry Rodriguez lofted a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run ballgame, but Kimball struck out Avila looking to end the game.

The Pelicans look to rebound in tomorrow night's contest with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 ET. It will be Webkinz Wednesday at the ballpark where the first 500 kids 12 and under through the gates will receive a free Elephant Webkinz.
