Potomac Nationals News Release
(MYRTLE BEACH, SC) The suddenly streaking Potomac Nationals scored another late-inning victory on a blustery Tuesday night in Myrtle Beach. They scored four times in the eighth inning and held on for a 7-6 win, their third in a row.
The big blasts came - once again - off the bat of Tim Pahuta. The red hot third baseman homered in the fifth inning to get the P-Nats on the board, and came up with the bases loaded and two out in the eight. He roped a line drive into left center field that cleared the bases, and scored on a throwing error.
Clayton Dill then came on to throw a perfect eighth inning to earn his first hold of 2010, setting up the Nats to score what would prove to be a critical insurance run in the top of the ninth. After a one-out single Jose Lozada moved up to third on a heads-up baserunning play. When Steve Lombardozzi singled to center, the throw from center clipped off the glove of cutoff man Amadeo Zazueta and Lozada alertly moved up 90 feet. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Nelson - and that run proved to be a critical one.
Cole Kimball, who has emerged as the Potomac closer, came into pitch for the third straight game (he recorded a win and a save in the previous two). The leadoff man Shane Moody reached on an infield single and moved up to second on a throwing error. After a strikeout and walk to Cole Miles, Moody scored the first earned run against Kimball when Amadeo Zazueta doubled. Miles then scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-6. But with two outs, Kimball struck out the cleanup hitter Gerardo Avila to ice the victory.
The Nationals will look to lock up their second straight series win and fourth consecutive win tomorrow night against the Pelicans at 7:05 PM. They will send the righthander A.J. Morris to the mound to face lefty Jose Ortegano. The broadcast can be heard on www.potomacnationals.com beginning at 6:50 PM.
