Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg took game one of a three-game series with Kinston with a 4-2 win at Grainger Stadium. Cody Puckett went 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run and three RBI and Brad Boxberger allowed just one run on two hits in five innings of work to earn the win.
Kinston plated the first run of the game in the first inning after their first batter of the night chopped a double down the left field line. Doug Pickens drove home Karexon Sanchez with a sacrifice fly to give the Indians a 1-0 advantage.
The scored stayed that way thanks to a pair of dominant pitching performances by two top pitching prospects, Brad Boxberger for the Hillcats and Alex White for Kinston. The Hillcats finally got their first hit and their first run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Cody Puckett to tie the game at one a piece.
In the sixth inning Lynchburg would take their first lead. Puckett tripled home a pair of runs to give the Hillcats a 3-1 lead. Puckett drove-in the first three runs of the game for the Cats and his triple chased White from the ballgame. White did not allow a hit through four innings, but let up six hits in his last two frames. Kyle Day followed with an RBI single to make it a three-run lead for the Green & Gold.
Kinston would plate a run in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run by Doug Pickens to pull within a pair, but they would get no closer and fell 4-2. Boxberger (2-1) got the win for Lynchburg (7-11) and White (1-2) took the loss for Kinston (7-11). The Hillcats are 4-0 in series openers are their current 13-game road swing, but are 0-7 in all the games that have followed.
Travis Webb (0-1, 3.86) will get the nod for the Hillcats in game two of the three-game series on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Grainger Stadium. Lefty T.J. House (0-2, 3.21) will start for Kinston in the middle-game of the set.
