Binghamton Holds on for a 2-1 Lead over Portland
July 3, 2018 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Tomas Nido broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out double in the eighth inning and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (40-42) took the rubber match 2-1 over the Sea Dogs (31-51) in front of a sellout crowd on Independence Eve at Hadlock Field.
Trey Ball retired the first two Rumble Ponies he faced in the eighth before Josh Allen singled and Joey Terdoslavich walked. Nido promptly followed with the game-winning hit.
Both teams scored two runs into their respective first innings. Binghamton started the game with back-to-back doubles by Levi Michael and Kevin Taylor off of Daniel McGrath to jump ahead 1-0. Portland answered in the bottom of the first with a leadoff triple by Danny Mars followed by an RBI groundout from Chad De La Guerra off of Justin Dunn.
That would be all the scoring the Sea Dogs could muster off of Dunn (W, 2-2). The Boston College product lasted a career-high 7.2 innings and allowed the lone run on just two hits while walking two and striking out nine.
McGrath was impressive in his spot start for the Sea Dogs. The lefty from Australia went five innings and allowed one run on five hits. He walked one and fanned three.
Corey Taylor pitched an inning of relief of Dunn, then All-Star Daniel Zamora entered with two outs in the ninth and allowed a hit to Josh Ockimey before getting Tate Matheny to pop out in foul territory to end the ballgame.
Ball (2-3) was the losing pitcher. The southpaw allowed one run on four hits over three innings, walking one and striking out three. Matthew Gorst pitched a hitless ninth for Portland.
The Sea Dogs open up a five-game series with the Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies affiliate) on Thursday afternoon beginning at 4:15 from Dunkin' Donuts Park. Righty Teddy Stankiewicz (5-7, 5.05) makes his 15th appearance of the year. The Yard Goats send lefty Jacky Wynkoop (3-7, 6.30) to the hill.
Radio coverage begins at 4:00 PM on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network. MiLB.TV starts at 4:10 PM.
Tickets for remaining games at Hadlock Field can be purchased at seadogs.com or 207-879-9500.
