McKenzie's Strong Start Leads RubberDucks to Shutout Win
July 3, 2018 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron's Triston McKenzie took a no-hitter to the seventh inning, and Tyler Krieger clubbed a two-run double, as the RubberDucks blanked the Altoona Curve, 3-0, Tuesday night at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.
Turning Point
The RubberDucks (48-36) scored all three of their runs in the second inning off Altoona starter Pedro Vasquez (2-5). Bobby Bradley and Connor Marabell led off with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt by Willi Castro, Krieger drilled a two-run double down the left-field line. One out later, Alexis Pantoja singled to right to chase Krieger home and make it 3-0, Akron. It was Pantoja's first Double-A RBI.
Mound Presence
McKenzie (3-2) was brilliant in his sixth Double-A start. He held the Curve (42-37) hitless through the first six innings. Featuring a lethal combo of his fastball and curve, he faced only one over the minimum through six. He issued only a two-out walk to Bryan Reynolds in the fourth. Altoona's Ke'Bryan Hayes broke up the no-hit bid with a lead-off triple in the seventh. McKenzie then fanned Reynolds and was lifted after throwing 91 pitches, 59 of which were strikes. He fanned four batters on the night.
Duck Tales
Krieger, Pantoja and Connor Marabell each finished with two hits. Krieger's double gave him 25 RBI.
