Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - Christian Binford tossed five solid innings for his first Triple-A victory as the Omaha Storm Chasers (13-11) cruised past the Round Rock Express (16-8) by a score of 8-3 in the homestand opener. Omaha is now 24-7 against Round Rock all-time at Werner Park, their best winning percentage against any conference opponent.

Binford came in to the game suffering three losses in as many appearances, the longest personal losing streak in his young career. He allowed only four hits through four shutout frames before giving up a solo homer in the 6th inning to Jared Hoying, and was lifted with no outs in that frame. Binford had walked eight batters in his last two starts but issued no free passes in the win, and had only six runs of support in his previous three outings before getting eight runs from the Omaha bats.

Moises Sierra and Francisco Pena got the Storm Chasers off to a fast start with back-to-back RBI singles in the first inning, then Matt Fields lifted a two-run homer in the third inning for his first long ball at Werner Park this year and second on the season. The 2-through-5 hitters collected seven total RBI on eight hits, while every batter in the Omaha lineup recorded at least one hit (with five multi-hit games). The 14 hits were tied for the second most by the Chasers offense this year.

Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 18 games, the longest hitting streak so far this year in all of professional baseball and a career best, with a single in the first inning. During the streak Merrifield has scored 17 runs by crossing the plate twice in tonight's win and has 27 hits in the 18 games (batting .370, 27-for-73).

The Storm Chasers will look to make it three straight wins as they send out LHP John Lamb (1-0, 3.48 ERA) to face off with Express RHP Jerad Eickhoff (2-0, 3.38 ERA) in the second game of the series. First pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
