El Paso Diablos News Release

El Paso, TX - Two big innings from the visiting Pensacola Pelicans was the difference as they beat the El Paso Diablos 9-4 at Cohen Stadium on Friday night. Pensacola scored all their runs between two different innings as they now take a six game lead in the division over the Diablos.

El Paso struck for an early lead when they were helped out by some poor Pelicans defense. One error in the first inning allowed Jorge Alvarez to score on a Juan Camacho single. El Paso boosted their lead in the second inning to 3-0 when a lead off error led to the Diablos scoring two with both coming in on a Kennard Bibbs single. The Pelicans had their first big inning of the night in the fourth inning when they plated four to take the lead. Their rally started with two outs and no one on, but they would hit a single, double, and two triples to chase Diablos starter Garvis Romero. El Paso came back to tie the game in the fifth inning when Jeff Vincent tripled and was brought in on a Mike Provencher RBI double. The game was untied in a big way in the eighth inning when the Pelicans sent 10 men to the plate and hit for the cycle as a team to plate five runs to show the final outcome of the game.

The Diablos offense was led by Kennard Bibbs who bounced back from a rough series in Sioux City to go 3-5 with two RBI. He ended the night as the only Diablo with more than one hit, as their offense was shut down by the Pensacola bull pen after the fifth inning. They had just three hits over the final four innings.

The Diablos starter, Garvis Romero, was beat up as he didn't get through the fourth inning, allowing four runs on five hits. Joe Klein (4-5) did another great job, but was tagged with the loss by allowing only one run on two hits in his 3 1/3 innings of work. Yury Santana took the brunt of the offensive explosion by allowing four runs on four hits in just 1/3 of an inning.

El Paso will play game two of their series on Saturday night with first pitch slated for 7:05. Josh Neitz (5-2, 4.45) will go for the Diablos against Pensacola's Dane DeValk (6-2, 3.56). It is a Military night as anyone with a Military ID will get in free and fireworks will once again follow the game. Fans can follow along by listening online at www.diablos.com .
