Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release
Grand Prairie, TX. The AirHogs bats led the show tonight, facing seven Captains pitchers and advancing a 14 hit, 17-4 win over the Shreveport-Bossier at QuikTrip Park.
Leading the way offensively was Aaron Garza (3-for-4) and the RBI-duo of Javier Brito and Mike Conroy with 5 runs batted in apiece. Cesar Nicolas was credited with an RBI-walk and a new league record of 92 RBI in a season. Matt Green picked up his third straight win (6-5) pitching a full seven innings, allowing only seven hits, and striking out ten.
Shreveport reached the scoreboard first when Bryan Sabatella led off the game with a sharply hit single to left. Jose Torres then smoked a basehit to rightfield scoring Sabatella from 2nd after a Chris Garcia walk.
Aaron Garza led off the bottom of the frame with his 100th hit of the season. After loading the bases with a Daniel Berg walk and a hit-by-pitch issued to Cesar Nicolas, Captains pitcher Luke Massetti left the game with an injury after facing just the three batters. Derrick Miramontes came in from the bullpen to relieve him and allowed a quick Mike Conroy triple to left center scoring all three runners, with no outs on the board. Brito would score Conroy on a fielder's choice ball to bring the score to 4-0.
The attack continued in the second when JB Tucker led off with a double to left center. Dziomba was hit by a pitch, followed by a Garza sacrifice-bunt moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Logan Williamson came in to pitch to Berg who reached base on an infield single, followed by a Conroy hit by a pitch scoring Tucker from 3rd. After a walk issued to Brito scored Dziomba, the inning ended with another push to the lead at 6-1.
The Captains line-up responded with two more runs in the third, when Chris Garcia led off with a single to left. He then advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and was scored by a Jose Torres double. Torres, who stole third, was brought home by a Jonathan Reynoso infield single deep in the hole at shortstop, to half the score at 6-3.
The onslaught continued with a quick one-run 3rd inning followed by a 4-walk, 4-hit, 4th inning which put 8 more runs on the board for Grand Prairie, including Nicolas' 92 RBI of the season, breaking the previously held American Association record of 91.
The 5th and 6th innings would include a Chad Gabriel homerun and a quick RBI single for Brito against the sixth Captains pitcher in six innings, but that would be all for the AirHogs' night.
The Captains scored again on a sharply hit Angelo Fermin ball over the head of centerfielder Conroy for an inside-the-park-homerun in the top of the ninth inning before the game expired at with 17-4 final score.
