Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FORT WORTH, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts fell 3-2 to the Fort Worth Cats at LaGrave Field on Friday night. Cats' third baseman Michael Bell hit a two-run home run with two out in the bottom of the ninth to steal the win from the Wingnuts.
For the third straight night, the Wingnuts were locked in a pitcher's duel for most of the game. Brad Davis turned in another strong outing, allowing just one run on four hits in six innings of work. Davis retired the first eight hitters to face him before a two-out single by Kevin Thompson in the third.
Veteran lefty Joel Kirsten matched Davis, allowing one run in seven innings on just three hits. Both starters took no-decisions.
Wichita scored first for the second straight game when Michael Thompson doubled home Steve Pearson in the top of the fifth. Thompson finished the night with three hits, two of them doubles and has hit safely in nine straight games. Thompson also made a spectacular defensive catch on a foul popup in the seventh, leaning over the stands with his feet off of the ground.
After the Cats tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth on a solo home run from Patrick O'Sullivan, Thompson led off the top of the eighth with his second double of the game, this one into left-center field. Brenan Herrera sacrificed Thompson to third base. Josh Horn followed with an RBI single up the middle through the Cats' drawn in infield, moving the Wingnuts back in front at 2-1.
Joe D'Alessandro pitched a perfect eighth inning, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Doug Hurn took over in the ninth and retired the first two hitters. John Allen singled through the left side to keep the game alive for Fort Worth. Bell was next and worked a full count before homering over the left field wall to win the game.
Greg Porter, who turned 29 on Saturday, went 2 for 4 with two doubles.
The Wingnuts and Cats finish their series on Sunday evening at 6:05 p.m. Gabe Medina and Jae Hun Jung are the starting pitchers. All the action can be heard locally on 1410AM KGSO and worldwide at www.kgso.com. The Wingnuts return home on Tuesday, August 18th when they host the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-4625.
