Chesapeake Baysox News Release

(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox headed into the middle game of their three game series with Connecticut just one win from tying their season high win streak of nine games. The game would however be decided in the eighth inning as the Baysox broke an 8-8 tie, plating three runs to go ahead for good, on their way to their ninth straight win, 6-3.

The Defenders jumped out to an early lead, putting a run of the board in the top of the first when Randy Ruiz plated Eugenio Velez, with a two out broken bat single for a 1-0 Defenders lead.

Both starting pitchers held the opposing offenses to single digit hits in their outings, with the Defenders only getting six hits off of Baysox starter Fredy Deza over seven innings. Brooks McNiven gave up only five hits over six innings, but the Baysox finally got over on McNiven in the bottom of the fifth, when Nolan Reimold connected for a solo home run, tying the game at 1-1.

The Baysox would break the tie in the bottom of the seventh, when Ryan Sadowski entered the game to replace McNiven. Matt Cepicky singled home Luis Jimenez, who led off the inning with a single, to break the tie and put the Baysox ahead, 2-1. Gustavo Molina would then single to left, putting Cepicky at third base. Cepicky would then score on a wild pitch in the next at bat, putting the Baysox ahead, 3-1.

Rommie Lewis would then enter the game for the Baysox, replacing Deza to start the eighth inning. Lewis would yield a lead off single to Carlos Sosa, who would reach second two batters later on a John Bowker one out single. Nick McCurdy would then relieve Lewis from the game and Tyler Von Schell for the second out of the inning. Randy Ruiz would then slap a double down the third base line that bounced over the bag, plating both Sosa and Bowker, tying the game at, 3-3. McCurdy would get out of the inning though punching out Simon Klink on strikes ending the Connecticut 8th.

Brian Anderson would then come on in the eighth and immediately get hit around, leading off the inning giving up back-to-back singles to Luis Montanez and Oscar Salazar. Nolan Reimold would then be retired on strikes for the first out of the inning. Anderson would then intentionally walk Luis Jimenez to load the bases with one out, bringing up Jeff Fiorentino to the plate. Fiorentino would then deliver for the Baysox, driving a bases clearing triple to right which hit off the wall, nearly missing a grand slam, plating Montanez, Bryan Bass, and Luis Jimenez for a 6-3 Baysox lead heading into the final inning. Bass, who replaced Salazar to put some extra speed on the base paths as a pinch runner, remained in the game at third base.

McCurdy remained in the game and sat down the Defenders in order in the ninth, sitting Trey Webb down on strikes, Jake Wald to fly out, and Carlos Sosa striking out looking ending the ball game and preserving the Baysox ninth straight win, 6-3. Nick McCurdy picked up the win in relief to improve to (2-3) on the season.

With the win the Baysox improve to (66-56) on the season, a season high 10 games over .500. The Baysox remain in third place in the Eastern League's Southern Division just 4.5 games behind first place Akron and 3.5 games behind second place Erie.
