Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Binghamton's Nick Evans drilled a three-run homer in the top of the sixth as the Mets came from behind to defeat Akron 6-3 in front of 2,541 chilly fans at Canal Park Monday. Binghamton improved to 7-4 with its third straight win, while the Aeros dropped to 4-6.

Akron got off to a quick start, collecting a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Brandon Chaves reached on Jose Coronado's fielding error to start the frame, and then promptly stole second base. Josh Rodriguez then beat out what was supposed to be a sacrifice bunt for a single, and Michael Aubrey made it 1-0 two batters later with a sacrifice fly to left. After Wes Hodges reached on an infield single, Ryan Goleski delivered a two-out RBI single to right-center to give Akron a 2-0 lead.

The Aeros added a run in the fifth as Matt Whitney doubled with one gone and scored on another fielding error by Coronado, but from there the dangerous Binghamton offense awoke. Akron starter Kevin Dixon was magnificent for the first five innings, allowing only one single and retiring 12 straight hitters at one point. Josh Petersen and Fernando Martinez opened the sixth with singles however, and a fielder's choice put men on the corners with one away. Daniel Murphy got Binghamton on the board with a two-strike RBI single to left, and Dixon then fell behind in the count to Evans 3-1. Expecting and ultimately getting a fastball, Evans parked it over the wall in left-center for a 4-3 advantage the Mets would not relinquish.

Akron had a good scoring chance in the eighth as Stephen Head doubled with two away and Chris Gimenez drew a walk, but Mets reliever German Marte struck out Jose Constanza to end the threat. Binghamton then iced the game with a pair of runs in the ninth.

Eddie Camacho (1-1) tossed 2.1 shutout innings to earn the win, while Dixon (0-1) was hung with the loss thanks to the big sixth inning. He allowed four runs and six hits overall in six innings, with no walks and three strikeouts. Marte recorded the final six outs for his second save of the year.

Whitney led the charge offensively for Akron, going 2-4 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Hodges reached base three times on a single, a walk and an error, and Gimenez went 1-2 with a pair of walks. Aubrey finished 0-4 with a sac fly, and his hitting streak ended at nine games.

Game two in this three-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, with Akron left-hander Chuck Lofgren (0-1, 5.79 ERA) taking on Binghamton's Jose Sanchez (2-0, 1.80 ERA). All individual tickets are just $6 as part of Welcome Home Week, and select two-for-one specials are also available on Two-For-Tuesday. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
