Altoona Curve News Release

TRENTON, NJ- The Altoona Curve turned in great pitching, timely hitting and stellar defense in defeating the Trenton Thunder, 4-1, Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Waterfront Park in Trenton.

Starter Josh Hill (1-1) tossed five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, en route to his first win of the season. Brian Rogers tossed two scoreless innings and Chris Hernandez closed out the game allowing one run in his two innings of work. Hernandez allowed a two-out, RBI double off the bat of Matt Carson in the bottom of the ninth inning, which cost the Curve a shutout victory.

Offensively, the Curve touched up starter George Kontos (0-2) for three runs over five innings, while reliever Steven Jackson was tagged with Altoona's fourth run in the sixth inning. Jonel Pacheco got the Curve offense started with a first-inning solo home run -- his third of the season -- and the lead grew to 2-0 in the second on Anthony Webster's solo blast -- his second.

Luis Cruz knocked in the final two runs on RBI singles in the fifth and sixth frames. Cruz also make several terrific defensive plays in the contest to lead the Curve to their fifth consecutive errorless game in the field.

The Curve and Thunder will play the middle game of their three-game series Tuesday evening at Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. The pitching matchup will feature Curve right-hander Derek Hankins (0-0, 1.64) against Trenton righty Dan McCutchen (1-1, 1.69).
