Bickel And Sharp Headed To San Antonio; Condors Sign Two
December 9, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors, official ECHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, announced that C MacGregor Sharp and D Stu Bickel were both reassigned to the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League. The Condors also signed G Josh Johnson and F Tim Crowder.
Sharp, 24, has already had a memorable rookie season in the pro ranks. He began the season in Bakersfield, but then was recalled by Anaheim, becoming what is believed to be the first skater (non-goaltender) in ECHL history to be recalled directly to the National Hockey League. Sharp suited up in eight games with the Ducks, recording six shots on goal, before being reassigned to the Condors last weekend. Second on the Condors in scoring with 14 points (4g-10a) in 15 games at the time of his recall, Sharp also ranked among the ECHL's rookie scoring leaders at the time. Sharp still sits tied for fourth on the Condors in assists and sixth in points, despite missing one third of the team's games.
Bickel, 23, is in his second professional season, but appeared in just 21 games last season as a rookie with the Iowa Chops, the Ducks AHL affiliate in 2008-09. He skated in every game this season for the Condors, and ranks third on the team in defensemen scoring with 12 points (1g-11a). He also ranks third overall on the club with 11 assists and second with 44 penalty minutes, while Bickel's +12 rating leads the Condors and is tied for the ECHL rookie lead. He scored his first professional goal last Friday in Stockton.
Two players were added to the roster today as well. Johnson (right), 25, is in his third professional season, and started this season with the Gwinnett Gladiators, going 2-1-0 in three games. The former University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldog played two seasons alongside Sharp and Nick Kemp, two Condors that also skated at UMD. In 2007-08, his rookie season with the South Carolina Stingrays, Johnson composed a record of 23-13-1 with a 2.80 goals against average (GAA) and a.908 save percentage, and also finished sixth in the ECHL playoffs with a 2.39 GAA in eight games. He is 39-26-2 in 70 career games, all in the ECHL.
Crowder (below), 23, is a former 5th round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and signed an Amateur Try-Out Contract with the Condors today. The 6-2, 185-pound Victoria, British Columbia, native skated for four seasons at Michigan State University, winning a NCAA National Championship in 2007. He scored 50 goals and 106 points in 151 games, and finished in the top five on his team in goals in three of his four seasons for the Spartans. Crowder missed much of his senior campaign to injury in 2008-09, skating in just 24 games, but served as an alternate captain.
