Bernier and Kaspar Score for Barons in 5-2 Loss

CLEVELAND, OH - Derek Meech registered a four-point night and the Barons failed to score on 10 power play opportunities for the second game in-a-row as Grand Rapids defeated Cleveland 5-2 on Wednesday night. The Griffins spoiled a night of firsts for the Barons as Steve Bernier and Lukas Kaspar scored their first professional goals and Josh Hennesy added his first pro point with an assist.

The two teams skated through a scoreless first period with both goaltenders providing strong play and a combined 18-saves. Drew MacIntyre made his second consecutive start for the Griffins and handled all eight shots on goal from Cleveland; while Dimtri Patzold turned aside all 10-Griffins shots in his season debut.

The offensive switch was flipped for the second stanza as the team's combined for six goals in 12:23. Meech got the scoring started for Grand Rapids with a power play tally at the 2:12 mark on assists from Eric Manlow and Bryan Helmer. Exactly four minutes later the Barons would tie the game at 1-1 when Kaspar registered his first professional goal at even strength on assists from Grant Stevenson and Tim Conboy. The Griffins then broke the game open with three consecutive goals beginning with another power play strike at the 7:57 mark when Manlow deposited a rebound past Patzold. Darryl Bootland and Jiri Hudler completed the second period scoring for Grand Rapids extending their lead to 4-1. The Barons then cut the lead to two goals when Bernier registered his first professional goal from Garrett Stafford and Hennessy with 5:25 remaining. The assist gave Hennessy his first professional point.

Grand Rapids sealed the deal with the game's final goal just 2:10 into the third period as Valterri Filppula scored his second goal of the season on assists from Helmer and Meech. Meech completed the night as the first star selection compiling 1 goal and 3 assists as the game's top performer. The Barons failed to score on five power play opportunities in the third period and ended the night 0 for 10 on the power play.

The Barons venture away from the Rock N' Roll city for the first time this season on Friday night when they face off against the Toronto Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum.
