LOOKING AHEAD:
AHL hockey returns to T.O. tonight when the Marlies host Syracuse in their opener at Ricoh Coliseum (7:30 ET, Leafs TV)... After a 4-0-0 preseason, Toronto dropped its first regular-season outing, an 8-5 loss in Rochester on Friday night... Colin Murphy, a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award at Michigan Tech in 2005, scored two goals in defeat... The Crunch opened their 12th season with a 5-3 win over Albany on Saturday... Syracuse spread the offense around, with 10 different skaters registering a point each... Martin Prusek, the Baz Bastien Award winner in 2002, made 27 saves in his AHL return... The Crunch got a shorthanded goal from rookie Geoff Platt, but went 0-for-15 on the power play... Syracuse took 52 shots on goal in its season opener; the Marlies allowed 50 in theirs.
Grand Rapids heads to the "Q" to take on Cleveland tonight (7:05 ET) for the first of 10 meetings this season between the new North Division foes... Jiri Hudler recorded two goals and two assists and Kent McDonell added four assists in the Griffins' 6-3 win over Milwaukee on Saturday; the Barons began their season with a 4-1 loss to Rochester that same night... Grand Rapids has won its last six road openers by a combined score of 24-10... Defenseman Josh Gorges, who made his NHL debut with San Jose on Friday, has been assigned to Cleveland... Barons goaltender Dimitri Patzold is 3-1-1 lifetime against the Griffins.
Manitoba continues its season-opening five-game road trip in Omaha tonight (7:00 CT) still looking for win number 1 after a pair of losses in Peoria last week... The Moose are 0-2-0-0 for the first time since 2001-02, when they lost just three of their next 13 contests... The Knights got in the win column with a 1-0 victory at Iowa on Saturday, the only shutout in the AHL to date... Brent Krahn, who posted six shutouts last season, made 36 saves... Manitoba forward Jozef Balej played for Omaha head coach Ryan McGill in Hartford the last two seasons... Eric Nystrom was recalled from the Knights by Calgary and made his NHL debut on Monday night.
Chicago heads south to San Antonio for two games at the SBC Center beginning tonight (7:00 CT)... The Wolves outdueled Omaha, 5-2, in its opener on Friday, getting a goal and two assists from Scott Barney in his first game after missing all of 2004-05 due to injury... Adam Berkhoel, making his second career AHL start, stopped 40 shots for Chicago... The Rampage began their year by splitting a home-and-home with Houston, coming back from two goals down for a 3-2 victory a night after a rally fell short in a 6-5 loss... Six of San Antonio's eight goals on the weekend came in the third period... Martin Podlesak led the Rampage with a goal and three assists... Chicago was 8-1-1-0 against San Antonio last season.
