Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (37-35) closed the series against the Charlotte Knights (26-46) with a win, taking five of six thanks to a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Polar Park.
Brayan Bello got the start for the WooSox and improved to 5-2, tossing a Triple-A season-high 101 pitches over 5.2 innings of work. The right-hander allowed five hits and two earned runs, striking out seven and walking three.
Defensively, Christin Stewart made one of the best catches of Worcester's season, jumping against the wall in left to rob a home run from Carlos Perez to close the top of the first inning.
Charlotte's only two runs came in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Logan Glass and a Mark Payton sac-fly. Bello got a flyout against Major League rehabber Eloy Jimenez to close the frame, keeping it a 2-0 game in favor of the Knights.
Davis Martin, the Charlotte starter, went four scoreless and struck out nine, and the WooSox entered the bottom of the fifth facing Anderson Severino. After a deep lineout, Severino walked two in a row, putting runners on first and second for Pedro Castellanos. A day after Castellanos notched his first Triple-A hit-a home run-he ripped an RBI double to right to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Grant Williams was next, and with two in scoring position, he lined a go-ahead two-run single to left to put the home team up 3-2. The swing gave Williams his fourth hit of the series in his third game and also marked his second multi-RBI game of the season.
That was the final run of the ballgame, as Michael Feliz, Zack Kelly and Kaleb Ort combined to hold the Knights scoreless over the final 3.1 innings. Ort delivered his 11th save of the season, tying him for second in the International League.
Worcester improves to 13-10 in the month of June and 12-8 in one-run games-32 of the team's 72 games have been decided by two runs or fewer.
The WooSox are off Monday and begin a six-game series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. on the road against the Rochester Red Wings, affiliate of the Washington Nationals. On the mound, Kutter Crawford (0-0, 5.89) faces Rochester's Joan Adon (0-1, 3.86). Radio coverage is live at 6:45 p.m. on 100.1 FM The Pike, 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
