Bats Power Past I-Cubs for Series Split

June 26, 2022 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release

LOUISVILLE, KY - The Iowa Cubs (33-38) fell to the Louisville Bats (27-44) by a final score of 10-5 in the series finale on Sunday at Louisville Slugger Field, giving the two teams a series split.

Caleb Kilian got the start for the I-Cubs in his first appearance since returning from Chicago, and the Bats jumped on him early. Jose Barrero took Kilian deep with a solo shot in the bottom of the first, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead. Three straight hits to lead off the second resulted in two more runs for the Bats, and they carried a 3-0 lead through the third.

After threatening but failing to score in the first two innings, the I-Cubs finally struck back in the fourth. They led off the frame with a single, a double and a walk, then followed up with a sacrifice fly and three more singles. With that, Iowa took their first lead of the game, at 4-3.

That score would hold until the sixth. In the top half of the inning, the I-Cubs tacked on another run with two more singles, bringing the score to 5-3. That didn't hold for long, however. In their own half of the frame, the Bats loaded the bases with two outs ahead of Alejo Lopez, who launched a grand slam to retake the lead for Louisville. They didn't stop there, as Taylor Motter and Stuart Fairchild each hit long balls of their own in the next two at-bats, giving the Bats back-to-back-to-back homers and a 10-5 lead.

From there, both offenses slowed down. The I-Cubs had baserunners in each of their next three innings, but didn't add any runs, and the Bats collected just one more single. That left the final score at 10-5, securing a series split for the Bats.

POSTGAME NOTES:

The I-Cubs did not hit a home run today, which makes the six-game set in Louisville the first series this season without a long ball for Iowa's offense. Their previous low for home runs in a series was two, set from April 26 to May 1 against Indianapolis.

Dixon Machado's three-hit day gives him sole possession of the team lead in multi-hit games, with 16.

Cam Sanders made his first relief appearance of the year today, pitching 2.2 innings out of the bullpen. It was just his second career relief outing at a level above Short-Season A.

With the series split, the I-Cubs are still in search of their first series victory on the road. They are 0-2-4 away from Principal Park this season.

Iowa will take tomorrow off before kicking off a series against Columbus on Tuesday night at Principal Park. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Clippers is set for 6:38. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
