COLD WINGS: The Rochester Red Wings dropped game five of the series against Syracuse last night, 5-4, behind an 8th-inning rally by the Mets...RHP Sterling Sharp got the ball for the Wings and registered a quality start in the loss after logging six innings and allowing three runs on three hits and three walks, all while striking out five...the one and two spots in the Wings lineup continued to produce as left fielder Andrew Stevenson and shortstop Iledmaro Vargas each picked up a pair of knocks and combined for three RBI during the loss...Taylor Gushue picked up a pair of hits of his own, going 2-for-4 and caught a wanna-be Syracuse base stealer last night...RHP Logan Verrett toes the rubber for the second time in the series and looks to get the Wings back to their winning ways...the Texan will oppose LHP Thomas Szapucki for the Mets' top affiliate.
SALUTE TO THE NEGRO LEAGUES: The Rochester Red Wings donned the Rochester American Giants jerseys last night as part of the celebration of the Negro Leagues...the American Giants were Rochester's minor league Negro League team in the 1940s...Rochester has worn the Giants jersey twice in the past two years and has a 0-2 record when wearing the retro threads...LHP Alberto Baldonado suffered the loss in both games.
SHAQ AND KOBE: Wings leadoff hitter Andrew Stevenson drove in fellow outfielder Matt Lipka twice last night and four times this series...the duo is a combined 18-for-39 (.462) with a home run, two triples, two doubles, and seven RBI in the Syracuse series...with four stolen bases this series, Lipka is 30-for-30 in stolen bases since August 13, 2021 (70 games).
NOT ON GUSHUE'S WATCH: After the Wings allowed a season-high six stolen bases on Friday, catcher Taylor Gushue got the start on Saturday and did not give up a SB against the Mets...the Mets were 0-for-1 yesterday when attempting to steal...Gushue threw out Cody Bohanek at second base in the second inning.
HIS SHARPEST START: RHP Sterling Sharp recorded his first quality start since July 21, 2021 (vs. BUF)...Sharp went six innings, giving up three earned runs while collecting five strikeouts...the righty has a 3.32 ERA (7 ER/19 IP) versus Syracuse this season (four starts)...his six innings pitched was his longest start of the year...Rochester has lost in their last two quality starts, falling to 7-2 on the year when getting a QS.
CAN'T TOUCH THIS: Last night, the Red Wings reached 10 strikeouts for the seventh time in eight games, going just 2-5 when striking out 10 plus during that span...yesterday was the 33rd time this season Rochester has reached double-digit strikeouts (71 games)...the Wings are 20-13 on the year when striking out 10-plus...RHP Sterling Sharp (5), RHP Mason Thompson (1), LHP Alberto Baldonado (2) and LHP Luis Avilan (2) all contributed to the Wings' 10 Ks.
SUPER-ILDEMARIO: Shortstop Ildemaro Vargas went 2-for-5 last night with a double, an RBI and a run scored, extending his season-long on-base and hit-streak to 10 games (6/15-6/25)...since starting his streak, the Venezuelan native is batting .464 (13-for-28) and has roped more doubles (5) than any other Wing during that stretch...the 30-year-old with 4003 professional at-bats has scored at least one run in the last four games in this series.
THE SYRACUSE ASSASSIN: The Wings send RHP Logan Verrett to the bump today in hopes of splitting the series with Syracuse...on Tuesday, Verrett came up one out short of a quality start...he went 5.2 innings allowing just one run with six strikeouts...Verrett has a 3.00 ERA versus Syracuse this year, spanning four starts (21 IP/7 ER)...the Wings have won four-straight games against Syracuse when the veteran has been on the mound...Syracuse has a collective .241 batting average against Verrett this season (19-for-79).
