July 24, 2008 - The Burlington Bees hit five home runs, including a grand slam by Ryan Eigsti, en route to a 14-7 romp over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night at Community Field in Burlington. Kernels starter Trevor Reckling (7-4) was rocked for nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 4.2 innings to take the loss.
Tyler Johnson was 3 for 5 with a double and RBI and Efren Navarro and Jeremy Moore each had two hits and 2 RBI. Carlos Colmenares was 2 for 3 with a double and Braulio Pardo was 1 for 4 with an RBI as the Kernels had 12 hits in the game.
The loss is the seventh in a row and drops the Kernels to 15-17 in the second half of the 2008 MWL season and 47-53 overall. Burlington improves to 18-14 and 48-53 overall.
Burlington starter Danny Gutierrez (3-1) allowed a run on five hits and struck out six over five innings for the win. Cliff Robinson and Jason Taylor each had 3 RBI for the Bees.
The Kernels look to avoid the sweep on Friday night as LHP Robert Fish starts for the Kernels. Game time is 7 pm from Community Field in Burlington.
After Friday's game, the Kernels head to Grand Rapids, MI for a three game set with the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Kernels return to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, July 29th to open a ten game, 11-day home stand with games against Fort Wayne, Clinton and Quad Cities.
