Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 25, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied for four runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning only to see the Bees score the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning in a 7-6 win at Community Field in Burlington on Friday night.
The Kernels trailed 6-2 heading into the ninth as Jeremy Moore was hit by a pitch and advanced to third. The Kernels were down to their final strike as pinch hitter Julio Perez launched a line drive home run over the left field fence to cut the Burlington lead to 6-4. Singles by Clay Fuller, Andrew Romine and Hector Estrella plated two more runs to tie the score 6-6 and send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, Johnny Giavotella smacked the first pitch he saw from reliever Eddie McKiernan (1-5) into the left center gap for a triple. McKiernan then issued intentional walks to Mike Moustakas and Jason Taylor to load the bases. The Kernels then brought center fielder Clay Fuller into the drawn-in infield for a fifth infielder, but Clint Robinson hit a deep drive to right center to score the winning run from third.
Kernels starter Robert Fish allowed six runs on six hits, walked three and struck out four over 4.1 innings in a no-decision effort. Relievers A.J. Ford and Naldy Calderon kept the Kernels in the game, allowing just one hit over 4.2 innings and striking out five. Paul Raglione (1-0) picks up the win for Burlington.
Clay Fuller finished the game 3 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored and Andrew Romine was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Jeremy Moore and Alex Silversmith each had a double and Jay Brossman hit a solo home run in the second inning.
The Kernels will look to snap an eight game losing streak on Saturday night in Grand Rapids as they open a three game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps. Game time is 6 pm as Dave Skoczen, the voice of the Whitecaps, brings you all the action on the home of Kernels baseball, 1450 KMRY.
Cedar Rapids returns to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, July 29 and opens a 10 game, 11-day home stand with games against Fort Wayne, Clinton and Quad Cities.
