Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Clay Hensley, Wade LeBlanc and Carlos Guevara teamed up for a two-hit shutout, and the Portland Beavers won for the 14th time in their last 17 home games by defeating the Sacramento River Cats 5-0 Tuesday night at PGE Park.
Nick Hundley and Chip Ambres hit solo homers, Brian Myrow drove in two runs, and Brett Dowdy walked three times and singled for the Beavers (27-23), who have won seven of their last eight games and 10 of their last 13.
Hensley worked three innings in the start for the Beavers, allowing one hit and striking out three. It was the longest of eight major league rehab appearances for Hensley, who was taken out after three innings due to a predetermined limit. LeBlanc (4-4) followed with his first relief appearance of the year, striking out five and allowing one hit and three walks over five strong innings for the win.
Sacramento starter Dan Meyer (5-2) gave up three runs, six hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings for the loss, snapping a personal, five-game winning streak and dropping his career record against Portland to 0-5.
Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez, currently with the River Cats (32-20) on a major league rehabilitation assignment, was 0-for-2 with two walks.
After Hundley gave the Beavers the lead with a solo homer off Meyer in the second, the Beavers got a leadoff double from Chase Headley in the third, and Myrow's single up the middle made it a 2-0 advantage.
Peter Ciofrone, who was named the PCL Batter of the Week earlier in the day, was 2-for-5 and hit an RBI single in the fourth, and Ambres hit his ninth home run of the season in the fifth. Dowdy singled and scored on a force out in the sixth.
The Beavers play host to the River Cats again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Ciofrone was named the PCL Batter of the Week after hitting .429 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in seven games last week ... the Beavers reinstated outfielder Vincent Sinisi from the disabled list prior to the game ... Headley, Portland's left fielder, made a nice diving catch to rob Chavez of a hit in the sixth ... the River Cats have lost two in a row for the first time since May 2-3 ... it was the first shutout victory of the season for the Beavers.
