Sidewinders pounded by Las Vegas 23-2

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders were handed their worst loss on record in a 23-2 pounding at the hands of the Las Vegas 51s Tuesday.

Las Vegas scored the first 21 runs of the ballgame, including multiple runs in each of the first five innings and at least one run in each of the first six.

Catcher A.J. Ellis led the attack for the 51s, driving in 8 runs with a single, double and grand slam home run. Second baseman Sergio Garcia led all batters with 5 hits in the contest. Every Las Vegas starter had at least one hit.

Sidewinders starter Juan Gutierrez had his worst outing of the year, surrendering 11 runs (10 earned) before being pulled with two outs in the third. Gutierrrez fell to 1-9 with the loss in the contest.

The 23 runs were the most allowed by the Sidewinders on record. The team committed a season high 4 errors leading to six unearned runs.

After four pitchers were needed to complete the first 8 innings, catcher Matt Morgan was called upon to take the mound. Morgan threw his second scoreless inning in the past week to maintain a perfect 0.00 ERA on the season.

Tucson and Las Vegas will play the second game of the four game set when righthander Yusmeiro (1-2, 4.68) will take the mound for the Sidewinders opposed by righty Joe Meloan (3-4, 4.14). First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:20 p.m.
