Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ON - The Brampton Beast (13-23-2) put together one of their most complete performances of the season in a wild affair that saw 63 penalty minutes dished out in the final two periods of play. The Beast showcased their offensive talents once again this afternoon by continuing their dominance of Sunday home games, improving their record to an astounding 11-3-0 over the past two seasons with a win over the Elmira Jackals (21-16-5) by a final score of 4-1.
Bobby Hughes was sensational tonight, leading the way for the Beast with two goals and two assists for his first four-point game this season. Chad Painchaud and Mathew Maione each had a goal and an assist, while Jason Pitton added two assists in a game that was won during the first two periods before turning ugly in the third. Trevor Cann was brilliant making 25 saves in the win, nearly his second shutout of the season, in a game that saw the Beast outshoot the Jackals 33-26.
The day began with the Beast hosting multiple literary-related activities to endorse academia and family-related literacy. The Beast realize the importance of this issue in the community, and support the promotion of new and fun ways to get kids involved with books. Through out the concourse of the Powerade Centre, people were treated to literacy-themed events, including a book swap, where fans had the opportunity to bring an old book and swap it out with one they haven't read yet. The fun also continued postgame, when the Beast hosted a free skate with the team.
The first period was a terrific one for the Beast. For the third straight game, the Beast outshot their opponent through the opening 20 minutes of play, holding the Jackals to just seven shots in the stanza. Their consistent defensive effort and overbearing forecheck put Elmira on their heels, which paid dividends for the Beast late in the period, as with just under a minute remaining Bobby Hughes passed the puck on a string to Jason Pitton, who then found leading scorer Chad Painchaud for an easy tic-tac-toe goal to put the Beast up 1-0.
The second period was more of the same from the home team, who outplayed and outhustled the Jackals much to the frustration of the opposition bench. Just over three minutes into the frame, Bobby Hughes broke into the Jackals zone on a 2-on-1 with Jason Pitton. Hughes looked off Pitton, and at the hash marks fired a shot low blocker that beat Elmira goalie Sam Marotta to make it 2-0. Later in the period, Justin Sawyer took a shot at Dalton Thrower and was sent off for interference. On the ensuing power play, the Beast set up in the Jackals zone and began firing from everywhere on the ice. After a quick shot from the bottom of the circle by Jason Pitton forced Marotta into making an extremely acrobatic save, Bobby Hughes tapped the puck from behind the net off of Marotta and into the back of the net for a 3-0 Beast lead.
The third period saw more of the rough stuff between the two teams. After Cal Wild made an open ice hit in the Beast zone, he was cross-checked in the face by the Jackals' Andrew Conboy, which ignited a fracas on the ice as the Beast captain was in visible discomfort. Conboy received 22 minutes of penalties on the play and was ejected from the game for attempt to injure. The play, which will receive a review from the ECHL due to the match penalty given to Conboy, gave the Beast a 10-minute power play to close out the game. Elmira scored a short-handed goal to make it 3-1 before Mathew Maione iced it with just over 30 seconds left on a beautiful shot from the point to end the game in a 4-1 final.
The Beast hit the road to end the month of January for two games in Tulsa, Oklahoma against the Oilers, before beginning February with another two-game set in Quad City, Illinois. After facing the Mallards the Beast will return home to the Powerade Centre to take on the Allen Americans on Winning Weekday, Thursday, February 5. If the Beast win, fans in attendance will win a free ticket to the Beast's next weekday game against the Tulsa Oilers on February 17. February 6 will be the night the Beast will unveil their new Canada-themed alternate jerseys, on Guaranteed Fun Night! If you don't have fun, get your money back! Tickets can be purchased online at bramptonbeast.com or by calling 905-564-1684.
