Bears Rally for OT Win over Penguins

HERSHEY, Pa. - Up by two goals heading into the third period, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were unable to prevent a rally that saw the Hershey Bears prevail in overtime, 4-3, on Saturday at GIANT Center

After a scoreless first period, the Bears needed only 57 seconds of the middle frame to go up, 1-0, as Stanislav Galiev took a 2-on-1 pass from Chris Conner and rifled a shot past the stick side of Jeff Zatkoff.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to respond at 5:40 of the same period on the team's first shorthanded goal of the season. Carter Rowney gathered a turnover at center ice and skated to the right circle before beating Bears goalie Philipp Grubauer with a wrist shot inside the far post.

Less than four minutes later, the Penguins took their first lead of the game with the help of their third power play of the contest. From near wall of the Hershey zone, Conor Sheary sent a pass to the hashmarks that Nick Drazenovic redirected to the top corner of the net to make the score, 2-1.

The Penguins would extend their lead to two 1:48 before the second intermission after pinning the Bears down in their own zone with a strong forecheck. The puck was worked back to the blueline for Reid McNeill whose snapshot was tipped in by Tom Kuhnhackl.

Owning 41 seconds of carry-over time on the man-advantage to begin the third, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had an opportunity to build upon its two-goal cushion, but instead it was Kris Newbury striking on a shorthanded breakaway just 17 seconds into the period to pull Hershey within one.

The Bears would control the rest of third, outshooting the Penguins, 15-5, and eventually knotted the match at three when Conner weaved into the high slot and whipped a shot over the glove of Zatkoff.

In the overtime period, Jim O'Brien skated with the puck out from behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton net and found defenseman Mike Moore pinching down to the left dot at 3:24 for a one-timer that completed the comeback for Hershey.

Zatkoff fell to 11-10-3 on the season with 31 saves on 35 shots. Grubauer won his sixth straight starts, turning aside 23-of-26.
