Capitals Recall Burakovsky from Hershey; Re-Assign Grubauer to Hershey

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals have recalled center Andre Burakovsky from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and re-assigned goaltender Philipp Grubauer to Hershey, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Burakovsky, 19, has played in 40 games with Washington this season, registering 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) and eight penalty minutes. The Malmo, Sweden, native made his NHL debut on Oct. 9 against Montreal and scored his first NHL goal in the first period. Burakovsky became the 13th player in Capitals history to score his first NHL goal in his first NHL game and is one of just seven players in franchise history to score a goal in his NHL debut and season opener. Burakovsky ranks ninth among NHL rookies in assists this season and tied for 10th in points.

Burakovsky appeared in two games with Hershey this season, making his AHL debut on Dec. 19 at Lehigh Valley. Burakovsky registered 87 points (41g, 46a) in 57 games with the Erie Otters (OHL) in 2013-14. He was named the OHL Player of the Month for March after tallying 24 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 12 games during the month and recorded a league-high plus-22 rating. The 6'3", 198-pound center led Erie to the best regular-season record in franchise history (52-14-2-0, 106 points) and finished the season ranked ninth in the OHL in goals (41), tied for sixth in power-play goals (15), third in game-winning goals (10) and tied for eighth in plus/minus (+46).

Grubauer, 23, appeared in 20 NHL games with Washington, posting a 7-6-5 record with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage. The Rosenheim, Germany, native made his 2014-15 season debut on Friday against Anaheim and made 23 saves in the Capitals 3-2 shootout victory to earn his first win of the season. Grubauer appeared in 17 games with Washington last season and ranked eighth among NHL rookie goaltenders in saves (434) and wins (6). Grubauer represented Germany at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Minsk, Belarus, and became the second German-born goaltender in NHL history to record a victory last season (Thomas Greiss).

Grubauer has posted a 16-9-4 record with four shutouts, a 2.03 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in 29 games with Hershey (AHL) this season. He ranks tied for third in the AHL in shutouts (4), sixth in goals-against average (2.03) and seventh in wins (16). The 6'1", 192-pound goaltender was selected to represent the Eastern Conference at the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic in Utica, N.Y, and won the top goaltender award at the AHL All-Star Classic skills competition. Grubauer has registered a 44-31-8 record with nine shutouts, a 2.29 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage in 85 career AHL games.
